    Are mexicans "spanish" ?

I got into a somewhat heated debate with a friend and the use of the word "spanish"

Do you consider it correct to call mexicans "spanish" ? And well, anyone else of so called "spanish decent" for that matter like peurto ricans, etc?

Or would you consider "Spanish" to be solely in reference to people actually from Spain...with no mixture.

thats how I alwasy thought of it. Spanish is the language that hispanics use but they are not Spanish. Would you call an American..... English? Also, I alwasy thought people from Spain were called Spaniards? They use to be refered to as Spaniards....dont know what they are refered to now though.

Spanish is the language that hispanics use but they are not Spanish.
but mexican spanish is not the exact same as spanish-spanish. Subtle differences here and there in spelling/pronunciation and conjugations.

But I always considered mexican's to be hispanics and spaniards to be from spain.

well of course not and they way puerto ricans speak is a bit different then the way people from mexico speak and the whey people speak in south america is a bit different then the way people from mexico speak. It is very similar and you can go into either one of those countries and get by with basic knowledge in the Spanish language.

Thats probably the most correct so far.

I believe if you want to get super technicaly, Mexicans can be considered 'Spanish' due largely in part to the blood relation to Spain, and the inheritance of the "Spanish Culture". However, with that said, its not 'correct' to label a mexican as spanish. Depends on how losely you want to throw the word around. I know where I am from its not a correct use of the word.

    ok,

a mexican is a spaniard mixed with aztec, or whatever other race of indian was in mexico.. mexico, just like the united states, was at one time only "indians", like aztec..
a long, long time ago spaniards came to mexico.. the spanish were very white and had light eyes.. aztecs were very dark with dark eyes..

well over the years the races integrated.. although in some parts of mexico, like patzcuaro, there are still people with heavy aztec traits and even speak a litttle aztec, while in other parts, like monterry, there are very light skinned mexicans some even have blue eyes.. but, i doubt that there are any 100% spaniards in mexico due to the fact that almost no women came with the spaniards.

i have family all over mexico and i have seen this.. by the way there are some very hot women in monterry.

if it was taught in your history, that arabs took over spain, then it's probably true.. but, do you know of any arab cultural influence in spain or mexico? i can't think of any.. i always thought the arabs were defeated by the jesuit knight crusaders .

by arab do you mean hebrew jewish.. or middle eastern islamic?

i ment islamic arabs who conquered spain for about 100 years and were defeated by Charles Martel King of the Franks (french). until now Spain has Mousques in it (islamic church) and arabic names for some cities.

Saying all that, why do you people call blacks "African Americans" then?. Shouldn't Mixicans then be called "Spanish Americans" or something?. Your either Mexican, American, European or African. I speak English, but I'm Irish if someone called me a Brit a kick them in the nuts.

I have never in my 29 years of life here met a Mexican named Kareem. Arabs might have ruled Spain and might have some influence into Mexico's culture but they do not make up Mexicans or the people of South America. Thats like saying Eurpeans make up Indians since they took over the US. There is still a purity to the race.

I agree with this. "Spanish" is the name of the language. "Hispanic" is what you call people of "Latin" descent. I have a very good Columbian friend, and he sees it this way also.
