    Computer Gurus... Internet Security...

if i can get someone's I-P address and host server name, is there a way i can tell if this the server is from a government agency?

    for example, something completely random:

    host: spider-mtc-tb024.proxy.aol.com.
    I-P: 64.12.104.29

could i find out any info from just this? is there an easy way to track an email to see where it came from?

    thanks

You could do an NSlookup for the host name or a tracert to find the route to the ** address. Do this at an MS DOS prompt. The NSlookup will only work on Win2000.

Program your router to reject ICMP requests.

if your running a firewall you can turn off icmp requests but that will not hide your ** it will just stop people from pinging you (send a packet of data from 1 computer to another if it gets an answer it is commonly thought of as alive or on) unfortunatly it is getting harder and harder to hide yourself on the internet unless you were to dial into a 3rd party and then shell into another one but that is alot of work just keep your nose clean and have a good firewall.

If you are trying to find the origin of an ** address you could go to http://www.arin.net and enter thier ** address to determine where they are located, (keep in mind they could be in china and dialing into a internet provider in canada.) For finding out if they are law enforcement or not you can't. They could pay for an account on aol or any other internet provider (just like you do) to hide who they really are.

    BillyBoy:

Since you are in the UK you may not be using a router anyway.

Do you use a standard dial with a modem?
Are you on an ADSL connection with an ADSL modem?

If so then you dont have a router to start with so you cant program the bugger

If you are on (for example) a BT ADSL connection you will have the green frog modem - This can be replaced with an ADSL router which in turn can be programmed in various ways.

You can hide your eyepee address by using online proxy servers, but this can be very slow and in some cases costs you money as well

    Billy,

if you look in the configuration portion of your firewall it should say something about blocking icmp requests. or blocking wan requests.

a firewall is always good to protect your pc.. or network. i have 3 pc's connected to a router that hits a hardware firewall and on the DMZ host i use the tiny firewall that comes with xp. (yes they incorporate it..). so basically the hacker must go through 2 firewalls with rules configured by myself. technically impossible to go through. and i dont use proxies.. to bored to randomly change them like before...

he billy i also use zone alarm and if you want to assume someone elses ** address do a search for anon 4 proxy, if your lucky you might find a full version which will allow a new ** every site you connect to or the demo one (which still works fine) gives you a certain amount of usable **'s, hope it helps...........HITMAN........PS you only need to use it if you have cable because dialup changes ** on every dial up. Plus dial up isnt worth hacking or tracing cause its to slow.
