More than likely, if your friend is truly a friend, he will be able to let go, and still be friends to both of you and give you his blessing to pursue the girl of your dreams. If he is not up to the emotional challenge that this presents to him, then you have a decision to make. Good friends are hard to find, even harder than lovers. But if the situation were reversed, would you be big enough to do what you now require from your friend? If so, and if he can't, then maybe your friend is not up to your level of emotional maturity and security, and you will have to decide whether to stick by him because he needs you, or to admit that you have partially outgrown the friendship and need to have friends more on your level. If you would NOT be able to give her up, then don't expect him to easily give you his blessing to pursue this girl... get another one. Maybe this didn't help much... but obviously the first step is to have a heart to heart talk with your friend and tell him that he means so much to you that you had to come and ask him about this, and ask him what you should do.
