Longer wavelengths of light (red, orange...) generally pass through the O and N gas molecules floating in our atmosphere. Shorter wavelengths like blue and violet do not get a free pass but rather they are bounced off the molecules and scattered throughout the sky. This is why we perceive the sky as being blue.
