Greetings from NYC.

Been here three days now. First day impressions wasn't good!. The city is (compared to irish cities) very dirty and there's a constant smell, not sure what it is, maybe its all the food stalls on the streets. The people are pretty damn ignorant, and again I'm comparing this to Irish people. Everything is fast paced, but I expected that.

Fvcking cab drivers!. First one was ok, probably because there's a fixed rate from the airport to the hotel. Other than that the rest have either ripped me or tried to rip me off. I took a taxi from Union Sq. to Ground zero, the bastard charged me $25-. Yea, I'm a stupid tourist. He tried to pretend I didn't hand him a fifty dollar bill. That night we got the same treatment. Got a cab from Times Sq. to 30th st. (hotel) the fare was something like $5 but he tried to short change me by $35 dollars. Thats happened twice. So I've learned not to give big bills to cab drivers and expect the proper change.

I thought the beer at home in Ireland was expensive, but WOW. $6 a pint, and their half ltrs, so not a full pint is just another rip!.

I had a thread about tipping a few days before I left. In my opinion most people here don't deserve to be tipped!. I haven't had good service anywhere. Absolutely nothing like back home.

But all the said. NYC is a pretty amazing place to see, ONCE!. Its like everything you see on TV I guess. The Empire state building was pretty impressive, I went early in the morning and got to the top in less than ten minutes, no waiting. The views are unreal, breath taking when the highest building your used to is probably 4-5 stories tall!.

I don't think I'd come back to NYC. Next time I'd try Boston and hope for friendlier people. But I'm learning to be more pushy. People will hate my new attitude when I get home.

I think thats about it. Oh, as a white I feel like a minority here, lol. And why is it that its the orientals who speak better English than everyone else?. Excuse me guys, and don't jump on the race card, but I can't understand a word black people say, lol..

Oh, damn I'm an ass man for sure. We don't have latino ass like this back home!. Have to take some street ass photos, their lovely!. Just a pity there's alot of fat chics here. But some damn fine one's too.

Hey (I thought I was almost finished) does New York have the smallest fattest police men and women in the world?. Although I've spoken to a few, and their so friendly, they could teach Irish cops some manners. I've also noticed most have irish surnames too, maybe I'll come back and join!.

Compared to Irish street crime seems very low, there's no sence of trouble here. Compared to back home!.

Next time take a trip to San Francisco, and take a day to hit the L.A. area to see Hollywood, Venice Beach, etc. I don't advise visiting L.A. and making it your mainstay, just a day or two pass-through. It's crowded as f*ck, and also has it's issues as w/N.Y. I'd stay in San Francisco and check out the crystal clear air, beautiful coastline, restaurants up the ass, Alcatraz Island, etc.

I've never been to NYC, but plan on going soon (hopefully this summer). I'm always suspicious of big cities, especially cab drivers. I always feel like I'm trying to be taken advantage of. Keep us posted with your experience.

Try to look past all the short comings of the city you have eincountered....... NYC is actually a beautiful city and has so much to do.

Be smart and you will have fun.

I like NYC but only to visit, I couldn't live there. If it's east coast you are liking try going down to Virginia along the coast it's really beautiful down there. People are nicer and there isn't so much nastiness in the air. The Vermont/Conneticut area is really nice as well, but can be expensive (though not much more so than NY).

What else did you do in the big city, and is this your first time in the states?

Ireland is a beautiful and amazing place IMO. New York would be too hetic for me.

I been all over the world and all over the US and I gotta admit NYC is unique in its own. People are pretty fiercly independent and rarely give a shit about anything. its a very tough place to live because competition is so tough and its very expensive, so everything is a battle. It's fun when you get used to it but its a very very tough place to make it in this world.

Yeah NYC is considered to be the greatest Mega City in the country. And yeah, Boston would not be too much different in terms of attitude, even though it is subtly very different culturally, as would be San Francisco, as Swole inferred.

But all of the cites here are, as many have said, cool to visit, but a hell hole to live in. There has been a rush for folks to move out of them here for at least 40 years. I am not sure of the statistic, but even though city populations are huge, I think they comprise a minority of the country's population now.

haha taxi drivers go out at night like late and watch them race each other its fun to drive along with them. every street light basically changes at the same times and at night theres less traffic its just funny they never stop!

i rarely take taxis when i go in usually walk around or the subway..1st time to new york have fun strike up a covnersation with some of the homeless you will have fun with the conversation they usually give you a good half hour of laughter..

the best to do is like take a week and drive the east coast and stay in every state for a day or so its a fun expeirence..although ft launderdale and miami are my fav stops on the way down and virginia beach...and yes the jersey shore in the summer.

ive never been to california only a lay over on my way to hawaii but i stepped off the plane in L.A. and you think that nyc air is filthy..lol

have a good time theres a good like book i guess you would call it about with every resturant in nyc in it give your how they are rated for food, atmosphere, price, service i believe its called zagats? good read for your stay in nyc.

also take the trian from penn station out to long island check out the beach and what not theres a lot to see out here for a 1st timer...gluck

also long island is cleaner air and more suburbs and get more roaralish the further east you travel..a few good irish places in suffolk county lots of people from 'the old country'

Dont count on that! It is one extreme or the other- crack heads and silver spoon kids that watched waaaaayyyy to much BET growing up, or the Yuppie/Richy-Rich types. NYC takes Boston hands down.
Head over to Brooklyn(Little Odessa) or the Bronx(Arthur ave) if you want a good time.

I didn't like New York as well. Too hectic for me.

Try out a smaller size city such as Kansas City and you'll have a different opinion than New York.

If I was coming to the U.S. for the first time, I would definitely hit up Miami, New York, Midwest, and La.

When I went to Ireland, I hit up Cork, Dublin, and Belfast and some cities in between. I liked all three cities!!!

to me...this is like comparing the 6th and 7th rungs of hell...when it comes right down to it...either one of them sucks balls.

JMHO. I've made it out in Boston for a few years (so don't look at me as someone who "can't" hack it), spent some time in NYC, etc. It's just not for me.

I prefer a different lifestyle...where people give a rats ass about each other and the sun shines more than 4 months a year...

Anyway tomorrow is my last day here. I'd almost lost faith in NYC until I met USfighterFC. He's restored my faith. Such a genuinely nice guy. Talking to him all night in the bar (he's not a drinker) I can understand NY'ers more now. He took us out for drinks and a meal tonight, and now I'm sorry I'm leaving NYC tomorrow.

Went back to see the WTC tomorrow. That place is unreal. Its crowed and you could hear a pin drop. I thought it was very emtional and hard not to get caught up tin the whole thing.

the wtc yea its emotional, i was i sr. in high school when it happend i live out on long island we left school and drove towards the beach we are about 80 miles away and you could see the smoke from where we were it was sad...just soo weird that something there could be gone in mins. sorry im a little drunk myself...friends bday..i woulda loved to come to the city to party with some fellow AR members i <3 the city
