Please say a prayer for my friends wife and kids....
A good bro of mine has fallen.......death really must fly on swift wings.........
Kevin Payne, lived across the street from me....he was a boxer who I talked to now and then and he was always a good guy.......he had a wife and kids.....
Last night he was fighting in my town for a title, as a lightweight....and he won...and if he won his fight, which he did he was going to be on HBO to fight an undefeated guy......
He won his fight last night, and at the end of the match he collapsed...didnt seem like anything too serious we all just thought it was exhaustion......
I just found out he died in the emergency room with an anyurism.....kevin was supposed to BE SOMETHING....he was one of the nicest people i've ever known.....i'm still in shock over this..its just hard to believe that something can happen so unexpected.....
please say a prayer for his wife and kids....

I never understood boxing, nor the UFC these days, with people beating others senseless.
Seems barbaric and outdated for the 21st Century. I'd like to think people would use their heads instead of their hands.
He leaves behind a family as well, those are the people who truly suffer because of senseless bullshit like this.

To me it's like a science and an art form wrapped up into one entity, both sports do have a sweet science but a brutal aspect to them. In the early UFC days it was just non-sensical violence that pitted 2 fighters with no skill to just beat each other down. Nowadays these fighters are so well cross trained amongst varying arts it's almost amazing to see how a fighter can dominate a fight when he can be on his back the whole fight. Or a pro boxer being manhandled in the UFC or Pride by a fighter who never even throws a single punch. It's not about male domination or testosterone driven ego maniacs, it's about showing who is the best in the world at what they do. Only one person has died in mixed martial arts competition EVER and that was an unsanctioned bout in Russia. In fact, for a sport that is so "brutal" it has the least fatalities among any major sport in the US. Also injuries are much less severe than that of football and even baseball. When people see blood it sets off an alarm in their head but you have to look at it as what it is. It's a cut. Nothing more. Things just seem worse than what they appear to be. Nobody wants anyone to die of course and it's sad that things like that happen but they happen in every sport and its always unfortunate and unexpected. RIP to your friend Hoss.Last edited by USfighterFC; 03-19-2006 at 10:41 PM.

He tore this guy apart, won the match.....but he just collapsed, everyone thought he had just passed out from exhaustion......no heavy blows were dealt to his head at all from what I saw..but im guessing it was from a former fight...

I'll for sure keep his family in mind and pray for them.
Also, not to hijack the thread, but this is directed to Swolecat's comment about the UFC? Tell me when was the last time a UFC fighter died due to injuries from a fight. . . Never. In boxing there is just no dignity in giving up, in UFC however, it's just knowing when your body is taking too much of a pounding. It's respected, as long as you put up a good fight.

and btw, sorry hoss that sucks

Someone is DEAD now because of boxing/punching/head blows, so it's obvious when people tell you to "use your head" they don't mean use it to get pummeled. As well, you don't know what the future holds as far as deaths, blindness, or other serious illnesses that come about later in life because of things like this.
It may take you to lose someone close to you to view it as I do, but just viewing the sport(s) themselves is all I ever needed to realize it's pretty asssinine.

As a former fighter myself I can understand how you and his family are feeling. But some of the finest people I have ever known were fighters and good ones. And ironically the most civilized!!!! Go figure!

Everyone.....thank you for the support..it means alot. The way I figure it....Kevin couldve died on his flight on the way to vegas, which is a possibility...but instead he died after winning a title match and had his hand raised.....and I figure thats the way he'd want to go down...as a champion
It's a small world.....this girl I sit next to in my English class, turns out she's Kevins niece.....we've never talked much but I found out today.....wow..

i know some say its and art or science or whatever.. but theres a reason why many people cant sit through a whole match and watch it wo squirming or turning the tv off.. in the ufc fighting its alot of just pouding the shit out of the guy.. some people love it some dont.. everybody has their opinions..

Why is it people study martial arts their whole lives? Why do they devote every single ounce of energy and all their time to perfecting what they do? They compete for a reason, and its not because they love "pounding the shit out of the guy." I dont expect you to understand, but take it from this perspective. In a normal persons eyes when they look at a bodybuilder, at Mr. Olympia they say "Why do they want to get so huge for, its pointless and they're going to die from pumping all that shit in their body." (This being said by a person who really doesnt have all the knowledge to be making a judgement) But bodybuilders do it for themselves not anyone else, not to please anyone, because in their eyes they see it as something they LOVE to do and can never live without. It's the same way with people who compete in mixed martial arts, it's something they love to do.
