when i was with my ex, $600/month everything included, right down town. Sweet. Not so sweet--THAT end of down town. With your friendly neighbourhood hooker standing in front of the building, stepping over a bum passed out on the front steps,...the building was like almost 100 years old, i swear it was haunted, but that's another story.
Oh and my car got broke into, 4 times in 1 1/2 weeks. I started leaving the doors unlocked to avoid having my windows broken. So next time, Im forkin' over some more dough for rent...

$650 for a double shotgun in the French Quarter. It is an old house, of course. The neighbors in the other side of the house only pay $550 but they have a leaky roof and no tile, chandeliers, or other stuff. totally unfurnished... nothing but the toilet tub vanity and kitchen sink so I had to buy fridge and stove and air conditioner. Still notbad considering the very tight housing market in New Orleans right now. The place could go for $1500 to $2000 post katrina. No off street parking... have to park in the street, but I have a nice brick courtyard and all my neighbors are millionaires. (well, except the girl next door)
I remember living on Royal Street back in the day, Girl, and I paid $275 for a one bedroom apartment. It was pretty much a dump, then. Now the same place is fixed up really really nice and rents for $2700, nearly a 10X increase in as many years.
Now, even out in the parishes, rents are up. Mostly it is because of the thousands of houses destroyed by katrina, but partly I suspect to keep the former project dwellers out by raising the rent to more than they can pay. I know one guy who owns some rental property on the west bank and he makes no bones about it... he would rather have the house sit empty than have displaced project residents for tenants, so his rents are even higher than the presently high market rates.
If you really have your ear to the ground and dont mind a few hours walking every day for a few weeks, bargains can be had. Well maybe not bargains, but cheap places. One girl who landed back in town with a paper sack for luggage stayed with me and my Princess for a couple of weeks. She is a stripper and makes pretty good money so we bought her a couple of dance outfits to get her going and told her she could stay until she found a place. She found a furnished one bedroom with shared kitchen in the faubourg-marigny for $400 a month utilities included. Sometimes the "dawg-siddowns" under the rear of the camelback type houses rent for $300 or a bit more, but the ceilings are VERY low... like 6 feet. It is also fairly easy to find a roommate type situation for $75 to $100 a week. The only problem is, if they need a roommate, what happened to the last one? People who are always changing roommates are usually hard to live with.
Love
Anna
