question for my black AR brothers

yea i say black, not african american. this isnt my question but let me clarify why. in the all too PC world we live in, african american isnt all encompassing and neglects a few things. What if you were white but had descendants from africa? Are you an african american? What if you are of dominican or Hatian Descent? You certainly arent african american. And technically if you believe that mankind arose and evolved in africa...arent we all technically african americans? well i digress. here is my question:

Do you(black people) find it offensive the way certain companies market products to you? Ill use McDonalds as an example, because its what made me want to ask this question. There is a commercial with 2 black females talking about the new MCD's premium chicken salad. Now they sound incredibly ignorant, use slang, and basically have that "girlfriend" type attitude you see from a talk show audiences. Why do they do that? Do they feel there arent any educated black people in america? Do you think ignorance begates more ignorance? By that i mean do blacks see that and say "yea thats us" and feel thats the way they are supposed to be? thoughts on this?

Smart black people never eat McD's food anyway.

Anyway about the question those commercials that are marketed towards the black community which perpetuate black 'stereotypes', it's a hard question to answer, i'm not offended…………simply because i do not care. However looking at it some blacks in the spotlight do act 'ghetto' so the companies are trying to reach a certain market? Well I’m stumped.

Marketing is marketing. If surveys show a decrease in product purchased by a certain demographic, it's only natural to aim advertising at that specific minority. Now, is it right that the black people are portrayed "Ghetto" in certain advertising to promote business? Hard to say. Studies do show it's effective.

not gonna argue if its effective. but it seems like whenever there are stereotypical irish, muslim, italian, polish etc portrayed in a similar manner there are activist groups out protesting it. is the black community accepting of it stereotype?

If it doesn't offend you why would you protest? Then again, coming to think of it, one McD ad did really piss me off! Anyone remember the one featuring the 'chicken strip squad'? I would have turned over a few cars over that one.

Walk up to a dark skin Puerto Rican or Dominican and call them Black or African American they will be offended. They're Puerto Rican and Dominican. Not Black. White people tend to do this. Anyone who is dark skin they automatically classify as Black.

The whole Black/White thing is something Americans are stuck on. I have a friend who moved here from Germany. His father is Black and mother White. He told me never in the 25 years of life was he ever called Black or mixed until moving to the US. In Germany he was German. Not white German or black German or mixed German. Just German.

I am mixed and since I'm dark skin everyone in the US calls me Black. When I'm in Spain people ask me if I'm a Spaniard. I tell them, no, I'm from New York. They say oh, so you're American. They don't make the distinction of Black American or White American. It's one of the things I don't like about living in America. Everyone is too stuck on color.

In the US if I go up and talk to a blonde haired blue eyed white guy I get "I'm not into Blacks." In Spain I talk to someone blonde haired blue eyed I get "Here's my number call me tomorrow."

Any product that is marketed as ghetto I don't buy. I am not ghetto and it does not appeal to me. I watch the commercial and think, "what a bunch of idiots", and turn the channel. I'm sure we've all seen people dancing around for kool aid.

I never got that, I'll use Victor Martinez as an example, the man says he's Latino but it's clear (to me at least) he's of African decent. I remember you saying you were Latino as well, what's the deal?

A lot of that has to do with people like Jesse Jackson and the naacp. They beat color down peoples throat until we're all VERY aware.

Victor is Dominican. If you ask him if he is Black he will say no, Dominican. Same as any dark skin Cuban, Dominican, Puerto Rican or Panamanian.

    I'm Puerto Rican & Black.

The NAACP keeps reminding us of slavery and how black people in this country were oppressed blah, blah, blah. The problem is that they are stuck in the past.

You are referring to outward blatant racism. The racism I experience is what people try to pass off as a personal preference.

You've read personal ads. "I'm a nice person into meeting new people and making new friends. Not into Fats, Blacks or Asians."

If you are not racist or have negative feelings towards a race why exclude an entire group and not consider for friendships or dating because of color.

Oh please! Modern day blacks are still feeling the effects of slavery up to this day, many have a huge inferiority complex due to how they were raised. What other 'races' spend millions of dollars each year so alter their appearance? Many blacks view African features as ugly, example; really dark skin is a bad thing, the lighter you are the better. 'Nappy' hair? You better go get some harsh chemicals and get that shit straightened out. Broad nose? Nothing a little plastic surgery can't fix. Big ass? Better starve yourself to get an ass like Parris Hilton. I know some people who avoid the sun like the plague because they don't want to get too 'black'. So don't come with that stuck in the past line.

I guess I see what you're saying. My ex boyfriend is Spanish, has light hair and blue/green eyes. When I showed a picture of him to Black people they said your bf is White. I said no, he's Spanish and looks Spanish. They said he looks White.

I guess it's exposure, they don't know what Spanish people look like.

the NAACP doesnt care about black people. at one time im sure they did, but look at all the heads of the NAACP now and see the mansions they live in, yea they are in tune with what a not for profit organization is supposed to be. Im sure they need to live where they live when their constituents are on the streets.

carlos- thats what i was saying. i used the example of hatians and dominicans because they are typically dark skinned and said they arent "african american" altho society would see it differently. and your point about the german who was saw as german and not a black german.... you must not forget that slavery was only abolished 150 years ago, unlike europe which had abolished it centuries ago. Also the civil rights movement was only 40 years ago, so unfortunatly the separation of blacks and whites is still fresh in our history.

That is American marketing. What is considered beautiful in the US. Light skin, hair, eyes. Just watch TV and look at all of the beauty ads. If the models are Black 99% of the time they are very fair skin. It's not often you see dark models unless it's marketed to the Black community. Like the McDonald's commercials.

maybe its simply preference. i like only brunettes lol!

oh and one other point you hit on, if i called a dominican black theyd get mad. well i find that most people from latin america hate being confused with another part of latin america. IE: calling a mexican a puerto rican would get the same negative affect.

Correct me if i'm wrong but the term 'African-American' is for African descendants living in the U.S. Haitians and Dominicans using that term would be downright silly 'I'm Afro-Haitian'? ‘Afro-Caribbean’? Sounds dumb to me.

Dude. Did you even read Carlos' post? He was talking about people calling every dark skinned nationality "black." What the hell does that have to do with Jesse Jackson and the NAACP? What you are saying, in effect, is that Jesse Jackson and the NAACP are responsible for Americans being "color stupid." I think Jesse Jackson is a horrible human being, but he isn't the reason Americans are culturally, socially and ethnically ignorant.

A preference is a greater liking of one alternative over others. When it becomes a requirement that's when it is a problem.

I ran a personal ad before and on purpose I wrote "Open to and interested in dating all types and races except Latin, White, Asians, Black, fat, skinny, out of shape, young, old, ugly or overly good looking people."

The funny part was the response I got. The same people who I had emailed and got a reply saying "Not into Blacks!" were writing me because they felt insulted they were listed as a negative. "What's wrong with dating White people." Or they would write me saying there is a mistake in your ad. You said you were open to all races expect White. Like me listing other races were OK but it had to be a mistake White was listed.

I got emails from other races laughing because they got the joke.

I don't necessarily think that makes you racist. I don't particulary find women from Asia attractive but thats just personal preference. People automatically assume racism.

I have to admit "Not into Fats, Blacks, or Asians" doesn't sound good.

Well, in my book. Hot comes in all colors. Hot is hot I don't care where it's from. I'll hit it.

Like me listing other races were OK but it had to be a mistake White was listed.
    That is too funny!

My personal ads are hysterical. The last one I posted ended with "some of you have so many requirements there will be no one left to fuck you besides clones of yourselves."

So don't come with that stuck in the past line.

You admitted its because its how these people were raised. I think everyone has features they want to fix. My wife has complained about basically everything you mentioned.

Its just another term meant to divide
