Goin To Nyc Tommorow To Conquer A Fear!!

My whole life I've dreaded public speaking, I f%&ing hate it. Last semester I had to give 2 presentations, i withdrew from one class and gave the speech in the other one. It was a catastrophy, sweating, twitchn, could barely speak. (still graduated though)
Well im transfering to a 4 year school and one of the courses i have to take is called critical discourse where you stand in front of a class give speeches and argue and debate issues. I was contemplating dropping out thats how severe it was. So i found this place that claims to be the social anxiety/public speaking center of NYC. And i said f&*$ it. My parents dont advocate me blowing $400 dollars for it but tommorow im going up for my first consultation. Last night i slept about 2 1/2 hours. This may not be a big deal to a lot of ppl, but i feel like im about to die. Ill let you all know how it went. Its 10 intensive weeks and tommorow starts my first week.. ive delayed this class for the last 2 months and tommorow its going down for real..

I'm the same exact way. When everyone is presenting and volunteering..I'll sit there and kinna sink down in my desk. Pretty much every presentation I have ever done, I have gone last. I have a huge fear of speaking in front of ppl. ..I feel your pain. Let us know how it goes.

good luck, hope it works for ya.

i used to have an issue with public speaking when i was a teen. i was really shy. after a while i just opened up. one of the big things that did it for me was taking theatre class. one of my friends talked me into taking the class but afterwards, i was glad i did. went from being the most withdrawn in the class to one of the most participative.

as far as your concerns, what is there to really be concerned about? the nervousness is the only thing to be nervous about. we've all seen bush give a speech, and you can't get worse than that, so don't worry.

I went to a boarding school that made every new student once every semister sing a song of your choice, 2 verses and a choras, and we had to do a performing arts show for our parents at the end of the year which meant that we had to be practiceing every FUKEN SATERDAY!!! anyways after a while I jus got use to it and I ended up givin a speach at my graduation and had no jitters, so I guess it did something for me... trust me take the class its gonna take some time but its like anything, practice...

WOW!! What an experience. That was my first time to NYC in 5 years. We get off penstation, turns out its being held in a penthouse apartment building, not an office or classroom like i suspected (but it never described the location) So walk around like i live there. Find an open door on the top floor and a long hallway to a room where theres like 15 ppl sitting in chairs (like NA).
Its the guys apartment where its being held, hes dressed professional but when i use his bathroom its filthy and the door doesnt even lock. The people in the group were all successful highclass type of people. 2 Doctors, a lawyer, Jujitsu teacher. (the women were so HOT but too old for me)
Then the first exercise beings, one of the hotties stands up to give a speech, shes kinda shaking, he like how would you rate your anxiety right now? Shes like 5 out of 5. She gives a shaken speech, and im soo relaxed now because for some reason i feel like ill be talking in a room where even if i do talk people will be thinking more about themselves than what the hell im saying.
He asked me to introduce myself and is like its ok. (i was like wtf, of course its ok.. i could be her) I was so relaxed being in a room full of people who were nervous and spoke so confidently and i didnt give a crap what i said. He gave me an odd look and was like thank you.
Towards the end of the meeting i realized the problem is the room doesnt replicate the real world, its good to have support, but when you have THAT much support of course youll give a speech... but then what happens when your thrown in the real world with competition and people who arent going to assure you "its gonna be ok". People who would actually like to see you fail. Imo, back to square 1.
So im not really sure, i think im gonna contact toast masters but it seems like they cater more to the art of giving speeches than the art of maintaining anxiety during a speech.
I will admit, the people in the room were the nicest, friendliest, most down to earth people in the world, and when this one hotty starting talking about how she use to cut herself because she was so socially withdrawn, i really wanted to hug her (i know it sounds gay) i felt her pain to a degree. I would have seriously befriended everyone in that room which i found weird because its more like 1 out of every 20 people i meet on the streets i would actually consider being friends with.
Ive never been so attracted to a group of people before but evenso NYC isnt convenient from where i live, the subways suck, and im not sure i need to feel so comfortable, cause improvement is gained from discontent.
W/e the case, i will find something this summer that will fit me, if it was local id def do it, but i need to think about it. Thanks everyone for your support!!

this is where i found it for anyone whos curious http://www.speakeeezi.com/

I have/dont have a public speaking issues its weird. If it is an assigned project that I know I will be going up to talk about for a while, I get nervous, but if in the middle of class orsomething i gotta stand up and talk in front of a class, i have no problem..

good luck man, haha "I wanted to hug her" good job
