June 12, 2006 - Police in West Philadelphia and officials at West Catholic High School are trying to get to the bottom of a fight Friday afternoon involving female students and a group of adult women.
It was Friday afternoon. The girls had just completed their final exams here at West Catholic. A group of them headed up Ludlow Street. That's when they were jumped a block away. Not by other girls, but by adults.
It was an ugly scene, caught on tape.
A 15-year-old girl, a freshman member of the track team, was caught on the ground and hit with a barrage of punches and kicks. Her mother says she was later treated at the hospital for a concussion and has multiple scrapes and bruises.
The police are investigating and are trying to identify the women on the tape.
The High School has already identified the investigator as the mother of a girl who had been expelled for fighting in December. She apparently rounded up a carload of her adult friends.
As the attack unfolded a crowd gathered. Witnesses say no one tried to intervene. Someone captured much of it on videotape and posted it on the Internet. It is available worldwide. School officials worry that it sends a false impression of West Catholic. They say it was their students who were attacked by adult women well off school grounds.
The school is conducting it's own investigation, still unsure of what sparked the violence. Brother Ahern says they will do what they can to help police identify everyone involved, and hasn't ruled out discipline for any of the girls involved if they did anything to provoke the attack.
