had to put my dog to sleep today

let her out at 6 am,heard a her scuffling, assumed its the pigdeons she chasing as usual, seemed to be going on longer than her usual short burst of movement(bull mastiff).so i look out side and she shaking a cat to death.obviously i shouted, ignored me.so i ran in garage for the shovel to crack her, couldnt find it,too late anway the poor thing was dead.it did knock me sick.and some of you may think so what its only a cat.the thing is though my grandson of 8 months comes to stay some weekends and the dog seemed to shy away as if scared or go under the table and ignore you if you had hold of him.so rather than be sorry down the line she had to go,the damage she could do in a split second, well i could never live with it.

Just so i understood you correctly you put the dog down cuz it killed a cat right? And you were afraid that it could do the same to your grandson?

That does suck to do that but you know you'd regret it for the rest of your life if the dog got ahold of a kid. Tough choice but a good one. You couldnt give it away?

That does suck but i think it is completley wrong to do something like that. That is why you train and discipline them.

    thanks guys.
style 74, we rang 3 bull mastiff welfare centers all of which said same.no room. and it would be hard to find a loving home for a dog that cant be trusted near kids.i paid £90 to the vet,i could of dumped her at a dogs home sayin i have found her like someone suggested, but thats not me.i had a duty as the owner to do the right thing, even if it does suck.

I hear ya man it must have been so rough though...true i didn't really think of that who is really going to want a dog that can possibly hurt someone in their family...even if you never think it would there is always that slight chance it can...i know bro it just sucks. Sorry bro...

not to sound morbid...but i worked for a vet for a while in high school. And for some reason they thought I was best suited to assist in putting animals down. I have held animals head upwards and looking at me as they were put down before. I would have felt a jerk or a pull if it hurt them when they get the injection. Your dog felt no pain at all is my point. There's no struggling and no whimpering. It's quick and very humane.

Sorry for your dog. You made the a tough decision that most likely saved
    a child.

Sometimes cats torment my dogs. I have to get out the ole cat trap and
relocate them. Last time it turned out to be a racoon. My dogs chase the
hell out of squirrels. They cornered the racoon, but, as you know they eat road kill and carry diseases so I called them off.

If my dog killed a cat. I can't say I'd blame her. She is just defending
    her turf.

Maybe your dog saved you from a burglary or robery. You will never know.
Dogs usually protect children, especially if you give the child a dog treat to
give to them and do an introduction.

Sorry for your dog. You made the choice to buy and take care of him not me.

Go and be your bad self.
i will pm you no need to rant in public

ok... both of you calm down. Ufa...
I agree... more could have been done. But what is done is done. If there was a baby in the picture the dog is no longer the most important thing in the household. The decision was made and I'm sure it was a hard choice. I'm sure manc feels badly about it and will continue. You don't have to agree with the decision, nor do you even have to give your condolences for the loss. But flaming someone who just went through that is a little in poor taste.

Manc, If i were you i'd try not to loose any sleep over it. It's sad, but trust me... i've seen dogs get put down for much less reasons. Like i said...it's a very painless process so the dog didn't suffer. Obvoiusly ufa doens't agree... and just chose a not so subtle way to show his objections.
