    WTF is Tone????

People ask me all of the time for advice to get tone. What the fuck is tone? I mean really ... what is it? Not fat? Skinny? What do they mean?

A guy I've never seen before passes my office. Looks in as he passes then comes back and asks me what do I recommend he eat to gain size and get tone.

Mind you, he's fat. I just look at him and I say clean foods. He just looks at me with a blank stare. Then asks me for a list of clean foods. I say chicken. He just looks at me like he's waiting for me to write a diet and training routine for him while he stands there. And I'm just looking right back at him.

I think tone means not ripped up but visible cuts. Kill the bodyfat.

I cant stand this word either. I think one of my biggest pet peeves of all, something I hear from females ALL the time almost everyday is. I wanna work out and get toned, BUT I DO NOT WANT TO BE A BODYBUILDER. I say ok you wont. They say no no as soon as i start lifting weights i get too bulky and just start gaining muscle too fast.

I just wanna slap them, I cant even express in words how mad this makes me. What the f*ck are they talking about? Please one of the female members explain this to me why girls have this huge misconception. They obviously have never gained much muscle at all in their lives so why do they lie and believe this so strongly?

I could keep going on about how mad it makes me but my face is getting hot now.

I don't understand why you wouldn't just help the guy. I'm sure you knew exacxtly what he meant, and if not you could have just asked him to be more specific.

You should find it flattering that he's asking you for your advice anyway.

Everyone needs a little help sometime you know...

Way I see it if I helped everyone that asked me advice I'd have no time for myself, my hobbies or my family.. so why again do we owe anybody anything?

I've wasted countless hours in the past talking to ppl about this stuff and they flat don't listen nor do they care to hear what you are saying.. they want the easy answer, if you don't give them that, then most will take what you have given them and forget it. I'm with Bino on the women issue.. don't even get me started.
Btw, I help ppl here who I feel will use what I give them.. props to the ppl who took the initiative to sign up on this board and ask questions.
shit on those who ask questions and don't utilize the free advice given.

I can't step outside of my office without someone asking me for diet or training advice. When you see a dentist walking down the street do you stop him and ask him to look in your mouth for free? So why should I?

i think female think this way becasue they see female bodybuilders and the general consensus is that ALL female bbers are ugly... hence they do not want to get so big, and thus get ugly. Too bad they dont relize that you can only get so big if you do certain roids...

it's just flat out ignorance, after all

It makes me mad and is my biggest pet peeve. I was giving a girl at the gym advice and she said she didn't want to lift weights because she didn't want to get bulky.

I told her, muscle building is a process. First you get tighter, then you get "cut", then ripped then after a long time of muscle building you get bulky. I said you're not even at step one yet. You have a LOOOOOOOOONG way to go before you're bulky. She reacted as if she I insulted her. Hell, I'm just telling the truth.

sometimes i wish all the stupid people who ask for BASIC advice like (how do i get ripped/toned) just die! They should try and find out for themselves rather than ask people and get spoonfed the info.

At lunch today I'm in line to pay. This chubby girl looks at me then says I don't mean to be nosey but do you workout?

(I want to slap her right there because if I don't look it, I'm doing something wrong)

Then she precedes to ask me questions none stop one after the other. Where do you workout. What gym do you go to. For how long. What time of the day. How much is your gym. Do they have free passes. What do you eat. How often do you eat. Do you eat before bed. On and on and on.. Yeah, she doesn't mean to be nosey.

I know you make a living off of your knowledge. Does it bother you when people ask you for advice and expect it for free? Are they put off and angry when you tell them you charge for diet and training advice?

You should consider starting a sitcom since these anecdotes from your life are hilarious. It's like you're the bodybuilding version of Jerry Seinfeld

If it's in person and they are basic questions, I have no issue helping.

It's the pm's and shit I get with a dietary layout asking for a critique and what to change that make me laugh and hit delete while I say, "some f*cking nerve".

I HATE THE WORD TONE MORE THAN FVCKING ANYTHING. People are always like "Hey..help me with a workout plan and diet" etc and Im like what do you want? ANd they say "TONE UP" There is nothing I hate more than the word tone.

Im with c_bino. Girls that say "I dont wanna be bulking and muscly" hey bitch...gaining muscle is not easy as cake. Its not like as soon as you pick up a dumbbell you are going to turn into a bodybuilder. If gaining muscle was easy, I would look like Coleman by now.

For the last month or so when ppl ask for advice and I ask what they wanna accomplish..right after I say that I say "If you say 'to get tone' I swear to God" and they give me this oops look like they were about to say it

Gaining muscle is not easy ahhh

It is a huge pain. I must admit though I did have one girl say the same thing to me. I told her she is very confused about building muscle and the process it takes and I went on and pretty much "politely" told her off. After the whole thing she actually said to me "Ya, you know what. You're right."

I wish I could have recorded that convo man.

When people ask me that i just tell them nicely. You should hire a personal trainer and a nutritionist. They will be more then happy to help you out and give you info that you can keep for life.

you are very right, i think it's funny how companies try to sell their products as if they are special because they have "no trans fat", or "no carbs", but they have 20grams per serving of saturated fat. SODA IS THE WORST, I think Coca-cola alone is responsible for at least half of the millions of cases of type 2 diabetes in this country. on the 20oz bottles of coke it says it has 15-30 grams of sugar per serving, or something like that - the deceiving part is that the little bottle has 2 servings. One bottle of coke has more sugar in it than I eat in an entire week.

From what I've been told and what I've read - toning is kind of a "myth"

Tone of the muscle is not something you can change it is merely the state the muscle is in - kind of like a ready for action state - so your tone may be a partially contracted muscle.

    Just my 2 cents.

So next time someone tells me they want to get tone I'm going to say what you want is partially contracted muscle.
