If you moved to a foreign country would you

If you moved to a foreign country would you learn the language? I am asking if you decided to live in a different country with a different language, would you attempt to learn the language or would you look for fellow foreigners and continue to speak your native tongue?
I ask cuz at my night job (restaurant bartender), the entire back house staff does not speak english except for one guy. Some of them have been here for many years, others just a few months. Of course this leads to communication and customer service problems, and I don't understand why the owner would hire somebody who won't learn English. And don't tell me they are doing a job others wouldn't do cuz they are making at least $10/hr.

If I were moving permanently ofcourse, when you move to another country you abide by it's rules and laws, language, culture and traditions are optional but IMO they help you get further, communicate better, etc....

If I was in charge of a resteraunt or somewhere were they deal with people they have to speak english only neccesary to understand, ask etc....

If they just do something like clean or whatever I could care less.

i'd like to move to france, i speak french. i guess it shows the people you respect there place enough to put some effort into assimilating, not just extorting the benefits of the culture.

if i was going to be there long term i would do my best to learn the language. but if i absolutely had to move to another country it would most likely be england or austrailia. they seem to be the closest to america. just have to get used to driving on the other side of the road.

I would learn the language. But my fiancé is from Poland and her mom is here and doesn't speak much English. She lives in a Polish neighborhood so she really hasn't had to learn. When we goto that neighborhood I'm clueless on whats going on. Nobody speaks English.

I would learn the language but pretend I didn't know it, just like 99% of the immigrants in this country.

On a serious note, you probably wouldn't need to learn it as most other countries have large english speaking populations.

If it where a country where they use a different alphabet like a asian country or russia I would probably not bother to learn the language.

If its another european country I would try to learn the language.

It's a waste of your time there if you don't.

IF you get to live in another country you've a great opportunity to the language and culture. It adds texture and meaning to life to learn and langauge is at the heart of learning.

I moved to Japan. It was tough, but I submersed myself in their culture and after several years felt comfortable communicating in Japanese. It takes time, but to be accepted it is the first step.

wasnt it a real pain in the ass to learn the new alphabet? Japanese language seems very complicated

Not true! It's American arrogance. We assume everyone else learns English as a second language. Traveling to Europe I learned that is not the case.

In Spain I met plenty of people who spoke Portuguese, Italian, or French as a second language. Not English. I speak Spanish so it wasn't a big deal.

I would learn the ****ing language. But here in America, people don't give a **** and refuse to learn/speak our language and what makes it so bad is that it is not mandatory. ****ing, asshole, mother****ers, cocksuckers...

I've traveled the globe and learned it IS the case. More people speak english than any other language in this world. In many schools it is mandatory to lean english. It has NOTHING to do with American arrogance.

Ditto, Most third world countries do not speak english. Me perosnally in South Asia you will find ppl who speak english (educated ppl) but to get around in the city in a taxi or a plaza they wont understand you. To answer the question above. I no alot ppl who can't really speak english and they have been here for ten years. I dont no why i guess their spouse can speak so they seem to think they dont need it. Also on the immgrant case they might not have the time.

In France, Italy, Greece, Portugal you have trouble getting by with only english.

It's in your best interest and advantage to learn the local language. To each his own.
