My thoughts on taking down of politics/religion board

I know there were some *few* individuals who made insulting comments or threats. Not only on the public board, but in pm's and on other msg progs like AIM.

All of the insulting comments came, for the most part, from the same people every time and usually about the same topic. These same people were banned multiple times. The rest of the contributors to the board carried on very politely and had great conversations.

My question mods, is why were those people involved did not get banned instead of taking the whole board down? All who participated there knows that MOST of the people were fine; that just those certain few continued to be rude. It could have been even that those bad seeds could have been warned to not post in the politics/religion forum, but could post elsewhere. And if they were found posting in the politics/religion forum, then they were banned perm.

I think it was wrong to take the whole forum down because of the 2-3 people who continuously made rude comments/threats. There were a lot of people who spent 95% of their time on that forum.

Before people start saying "this is a bb'ing site and that forum wasnt needed anyway" then there shouldnt be a lot of the other forums either, using that logic.

Also Mods, this is not a rant against you. Just expressing my thoughts. So please dont just read this, get mad cuz I think you were wrong, and close it. That would be childish behavior (no names, but Ive seen this done before by one mod here and thats the only reason I bring it up).

Thoughts from anyone? Is there any thoughts on bringing back the politics/religion forum? I think you've lost some good people because of it.

    Thanks, Max.

I agree and I think it should be brought back, BUT if someone crosses the line in that forum and its a suspension and not a ban, when their suspension is lifted, they should still be NOT able to post in the PRW forum for 2 more weeks and strike 2, Never be able to post in it again.

The problem comes into play when the line is drawn. The line is drawn by the mods, and each have different tolerance levels, hot buttons, etc...I have seen suspensions for very minor cracks by one mod, and nothing from another mod for a major crack. I'd like to see it come back. Let it be a free for all....its gonna be rough but if you don't like it, don't go to that forum. 99% of the posters in the PRW forum are aggressive, test pumped males....we don't follow the international rules of debate, and won't win any "miss manners" contests. But at the end of the day I hold no ill will, I enjoy a good dust up and its interesting to "hear" so many different words that are considered profanity in different countries.

But then again.....I don't pay for this site.

the reason it was created was because otherwise these arguments tend to spill over into the lounge and piss off the "general public". a place should be set aside for people to express those views. if don't want to read opposing opinions, don't go there.

Although I'm a relatively new guy to AR, I left ************.com because the so-called political/religious forum turned into a neo-nazi, racist rant fest. I don't know why there are so many racist bb'ers and strength athletes but I think many of those threads turn people off to the entire forum. Although 'ology was great for information, just the fact that there were so many bigots caused me to leave. I really like the religion/politics forums but if it's not monitored it will degrade itself into lots of hate speech. IMO!

I agree Teabagger, it may be hard when you have multiple vets monitoring the threads. But their line is the line. If a mod says "Hey Max, back off a bit, youve crossed 'my' line", then that should be it... I then see where that line is and I should back off. If not then further action can be taken against me. For the most part though, everyone that was taking part in that forum knew what crossed the line. You dont say you wanna kill someone because of their beliefs. you can disagree, but people know when they are getting close to the line and for the most part, people didnt take it that far. some people would go close, and some people's tones were a little harsh, but in this kind of forum, you are going to have harsher tones because of feelings involved. But a harsh tone does not always mean offensive. It all depends on what you say. How you say something matters, but for the most part, it was blatant comments that made them take down the forum. and those people should be punished.

Thanks for the reply MMA. And your post is exactly why I think it should be brought back. Eventually, it may start to leak into the lounge (as this thread is, my apologies, but nowhere else to put it). And I know most people in lounge dont care about this stuff.

    Thanks so far for opinions.

and see thats thing here bgmc31, this forum had people of different beliefs, christian, muslim, satanist, agnostic, non-believers, mormon...everything. and even though there were so many different beliefs, it was quit low key. very informative, people listened and responded rather politely. With the exception of maybe 3 people who did make some extreme comments, and it was those 3 that basically brought down the forum.

In the News has become the default Political Forum. Although since a couple of well know loonies finally got the message it has been amazingly quiet there.

    Well said and good thread.

Like bgmc31 said, 'ology and a lot of other boards are filled with bigots. The mods here did an EXCELLENT job keeping everyone inline and respectful. That's pretty rare. Sucks that it had to change.

or just restrict access to the forum until a certain number of posts say 200 something like that.

This way the ones that are banned cant come right back and cause trouble in that forum again. Because they will be banned before they ever even get to 200 posts more than likely.

i agree that it will start to spill over, so we have left the news forum open and it has kinda taken the place of the religion/politics forum, which is not the same but i was one of the admins in there trying to clean it up and finally just let it go...it was like patrolling a preschool with pockets full of candy.....

Scriptfactory, your right the mods did do an excellent job, and yes it was changed, but it isnt as bad as you think...there are still a lot of good mods on here and this place is still number one for that reason...
