Narkissos.. 2006 Contest revisited...
Ok guys... I know y'all've been waiting for this thread. I've got some really close friends here so i'll try not spare a detail.
Where do i start?
Feb 2006: 212 lbs.. end of offseason. Decided on the Nationals here and my contest of choice.. Started prep. Based on the muscle gained.. and the changes to my physique i estimated that i'd be ripped at 180 lbs.. Then i'd carb-deplete prior to the weigh-in and make my class at the upper limit.
The reality...
August 16th-19th 2006: 174 lbs.. Hard and getting harder. Got to the weigh-in... carb depleted (not on purpose)... the dial stopped at 167 lbs. I could not believe it. I was the lightest man in my class.. and i didn't have much time to fill out... Upped my potassium.. cut my sodium and piled in my carbs... Bumped my water.. and then lowered it.. Filling out somewhat... I'd guess i was at 172 lbs at the night show. Still a far way from the 180 i predicted.. but *shrugs* had to work with what i had. At that weight... i still had the best legs on stage.. and one of the best backs... but my chest and delts were no match for the more heavily muscled guys.
Before i get to the comparisons... I'll talk about the posing.
We were required to hand our CDs in at the weigh-in... I did. I checked mine prior to handing it in.. it was working. When i hit stage.. it suddenly wasn't! I went to my bag for the spare CD.. gave 'em it.. and that wasn't working either!
The Chief judge told me i had two choices: not pose.. or pose to whatever the DJ played. I chose the latter. Told him "fuck that.. i'm a competitor" They played some reggae shit... I dunno wtf they were thinking.. "Buffalo Soldier" or some shit. Bear in mine.. i pose to heavy metal or alternative music. Had to modify my routine in the split second... and pulled it off. Got an awesome crowd response!!!
Ok the competition. I was in shape... symmetrical.. but outmassed...bottomline. I fought.. posed hard. Held my own... Elbowed the champ during the pose-down lol.. Challenged his leg and ab development during that round also.. Had a blast. Crowd response had me placing higher... 3rd actually. One pro who watched complimented me on the improvements i mader over the course of the year.. and everyone else (cept one person.. ) said the same. The pro and an aspiring pro (both former national title holders) both told me not to take a break from competing... Just 'keep doing what i'm doing'.. The others, my family included, said to take a year or three off.. and come back to dominate.
This is my second bad placing in 7 years of competing... but for the first time i don't feel bad about it. Last year was my first 'defeat'... I was totally confused about that decision.. since i thought i'd won. This year.. the response and feedback i got made it worth it... especially the response to my posing... and my legs and back.. as i had really worked to improve both areas over the last year. The champ of the division complemented me on the development and condition.. others in the division did as well.
As for my gameplan? I'm between minds. I've learned a lot from this contest...but i don't ever want to go to a contest just 'to place'. I'm a winner.. a competitor. I told the champ before we hit stage "you're going to beat me tonight... but i'm taking a year or so off and i think when i return you should retire"
He laughed at that... but he knew i was serious.. and told me he respected that.
Ok.. enough of the serious stuff.
I'll re-cap the night's events.
Remy Martin VSOP Brandy.. i hit a couples shot of this (with honey and vanadyl sulphate.. and niacin) before i went onstage (during my pump up).. Got very vascular... very full. Alcohol gives the most wicked pumps!
After i got off stage. .me and the guys finished the rest of the bottle.
From there it was party time lol.
We hung out with the fitness chicks.. they were HOT!
Then i broke off and went out to eat with my girl.
1 pizza.. 1/2 lb brownies.. 1/2 jar peanut butter.. 3 soya drinks... 1 diet sprite.. 1 diet coke... 1 karaoke session
The team that won the team trophy for 'most classes won', incidentally the gym i formerly represented, went out for drinks.. but i figured i had had enough alcky for the nite.. So we went and sang karaoke instead
A bunch of huge veined guys standing around a mike
Good times.
Came home.. showered off my jana tana tan.. and logged on here.
3:49 am. now
Gonna get back to eating.
Got some fried shit with my name on it
Thanks for your support guys.

Nark....
The CD not working was F**KED... But alot of people in that situation would have freaked. I have to give you alot of respect for staying composed and posing to a complelty diffrent genre of music.
Taking a year off? Meaning No competitions correct?
Most people don't want to do the hard; that's why it's so easy to be successful. There's no competition! Remember short-term pain will equal long term gain and vice versa. It's the hard that makes you great. It's the willingness to do the hard that separates you from your competition, because most of them are only willing to do the easy. Unfortunately, in the long run, the easy always turns out to be the hard. "

Like i told my girl.. i'm depressed every single day of my contest prep... She feels anxious about me but i tell her not to worry. When i hit the stage for that 60 seconds i forget everything i endured. I forget everything i feel. It's a pure moment. Just me and the people following every gesture i make with my hands.. smiling when i smile.. loving it as i do.
It was an honour to be onstage... didn't matter what they played

Others suggest i continue to compete.
I've been thinking however that i should stay lean in the offseason and try to grow. If i'm near contest shape around the time a contest comes around.. i'll hop onstage... no depletion... Just using the show to gauge my improvements.
I dunno yet tho.
My body's tired.. as is my mind.

Well done for fighting your corner in less than perfect circumstances.. Many would have pulled out. It's good that you got some helpful feedback that you can use to come back stronger. Look forward to the pics.

the reality of being a pro in any sport is sometimes you do everything right and still dont come out on top. i remember as a kid everyone always saying work hard, stay focused and you'll always be number one. then, as a pro, i remember a coach telling me one time after a tough playoff loss that there were no answers sometimes. he went out and told the media the usual b.s. ya know we made some mistakes, didnt capatalize, a few bad turnovers, blah, blah, blah...it was then i realized that i, and we, did everything correct and to the best of our ability and still lost. sometimes people(teams) are just better. the work and determination that got you this far nark will carry you through. you definitley have no reason to second guess yourself. you are a good bro and well respected by alot of people here and im sure everywhere else. keep pluggin away and stick to your work ethic and routine for you and only you and there will be the day when the judges agree with your opinion of yourself and if that day never comes at least you'll know you gave it your all. great job and best of luck in the future.

......Bro......Congrats on following through in spite of the musical glitch. Seems it can happen to the best of us.
So...do you feel you waited too long to carb up? and I'm curious as to the total carb grams during that period?
Also, you said you where going to keep the pre-stage pump-up to a minimum.
Seems this idea has some merit...did it work for you?
Enjoy you cinnamon french toast w/strawberries and whipped cream!!!
....sure wish I could.
...oh well...How does that quote go?

Nark, your hard wrk and determination will make you a champ again in due time. i wonder if the champ could sleep last night after you told him he should retire. in any case, it is so great for me to see someone work harder than me. be more dedicated than me, and look better than i will ever look. you are very inspirational to many guys on this site who take BBing seriously. I'm just a noob to the sport and the lifestyle but I think you have accomplished so much already and i applaud you for that. CONGRATULATIONS NARK!
