Sobriety check points, what's your thought?

I think they do alot of good, but it always did seem like "illegal search and sieziure to me" it saves alot of lives. Wandering what everyone else thinks about it? Then they ask for drivers liscense and proof of insurance, seems kind of wrong some how. I know the legal issue has been answered in the courts. I just hate giving up any kind of rights with the old " it's for the common good response"

That what I was thinking, or like south africa use to be where you had to have your "papers" at all times. I can't deny it does good, but it just seems "unamerican" to ask for "papers" or you get punished ( ticketed or even have to bail out)

They had one one time after a chiefs game and it took hours for people to get home. The shlt hit the fan the next day and the top police guy (whatever title he had) heard alot of crap over it. It just seems jacked up to shut down a highway any time they feel like it, reminds me of the old days whenever a small town needed money, they would run speed traps and ticket everyone they could. Where I live they have alot of "cruisers", so every once and awhile they will have "vehicle inspections" where they just shut down all the roads and fuk with everyone.

I agree. The value of civil liberties as "assured" in our constition is becoming increasingly endangered as the conservatives are changing the rules and things are becoming increasingly fascist. This romantic sounding word "freedom" is sounding more like empty meaningless jingoism to me.

Agreed, it's the same with the seat-belt laws. Ask your city counselman why, if seat-belts are so important, is it okay for 40,000,000 kids to ride a school bus two times a day with no seat-belts? CASH-COW

I think the sobriety tests are bull-shit. My friend and i were on his boat and he got and OUI. The tests he had to do were bogus and there was a big storm coming in and it was windy as hell and they still failed him on any of the tests.

If your not drinking then whats the big deal?

My brother was hit by a drunk driver. If doing that helps keep people off the road when drinking then I am all for it.

it's bullsh*t. the law regarding DUI's needs to be rethought. I got arrested for DUI and I was not even drunk. Now, I have to pay over $7,000 just to fight it in court.

On a side note, I think if you are ever wrongfully accused of anything and you are found innocent, the government should refund you all the money you had to spend on lawyers, court fees, etc. just to clear your name.

That's the tricky things with these laws, it's a good thing but at what price?
The big deal is they mess with everyone by shutting down the highway, another way to look at it is: what if a murderer was know to be in a certain small city and they did a search of every house till they found him, it worked and they caught the guy that killed xyz amount of kids. (drunk driving kills too) was it a good idea? didn't really hold the people up too much, they just did a quick search of each house. They also use the old "you sign away a certain amount of rights when you sign your drivers liscense" what if in order to get a house you had to sign a form saying they can search your house "when needed"?

i think sober check points are fine.....and while they got you stopped, they should search your vehicle and make you piss in a bottle.

its a fundamental problem bro, you cant measure drunkeness, but you can measure intoxication. they are 2 totally different things, most people dont realize that. we can both blow a .12 and one of us will appear dead sober and act fine the other will be falling all over the place. its an inperfect system but the best one we have because a few morons screwed it up for the rest of us.

on the topic of the check points....if it deters people from driving drunk im all for it. i have a real bad attitude toward drunk drivers, just man up and pay for a cab or walk. i lost a friend in a drunk driving incident, i wish nothing but harm to those who are so selfish that they endanger the lives of others.

I think they should keep the stupid person check points in play..

that's where they stop everyone, and if someone does or says something stupid, they get a ticket...

I know in Jersey they HAVE TO put it in the paper where, and when they're are conducting them.

Then again you'd have to be an idiot to drive drunk at the Jersey shore, because either your bound to get stopped or kill someone.

They are not infringing on your rights. You don't have a right to drive a car. Its a privilege. If you read the shit when you get a license you are agreeing to have this stuff done.

No no no, you guys are all screwed up! We are the land of the free, but by using the roads we consent to obeying the laws and also submit to consent to a breathalizer test.
I am all for the tests because I don't want to die.

They have been doing this for years in Australia. They have what we call "Booze Buses" they park them on the side of the road randomly and breath test everyone the drives by. They are only for breath testing though.

Its not the same thing. Not even a good analogy. A house its your property you own it. A car you may own. But your are using it on public roads. The state owns them. They are giving you permission to use them with certain conditions.
