Wow very sad. I wanted to be a marine biologist growing up. I guess we forget working with animals is a dangerous profession.

I scuba dive and always thought sting rays were passive animals. The only thing I can think of maybe he was agitating the sting ray and pissed it off.

It is possible for ray stings to be fatal if they sever major arteries, are in the chest or pelvic region, or are improperly treated. Their stingers are normally ineffective against their main predator, sharks.

Although death is always a tragic thing, I think it was unavoidable and merely a matter of time before it happened.
I salute his great love for animals, his knowledge and enthusiasm, but had anyone really believed he would die from old age the way he always behaved like a complete lunatic around the animals?

I was shocked to hear the news today. That is a massive loss to Australia and animal lovers all over the world. When I was a little kid I wanted to be just like him, I was into catching snakes and other reptiles and stuff. I did 5 days work experience in Taronga Zoo in sydney.
I hope someone can step-up and carry on where Steveo left off.

this is seriously sad! its just horrific that he went filming with all animals with no malicious intent and yet a 'calm' stingray killed him. i suppose this is just mother nature in a way, the stingray obviously felt threatened and waned to defend itself. unfortunately, its killed a legend of TV. i have so much respect for someone who cares so much for animals and wants the best for them. and he had so much passion for it, he has all my respect.

RIP steve irwin, such a cruel twist of fate that after working with all the aggresive and insanely dangerous animals he did he was killed by a sting ray. I for one hope the video never see s the light of day, it will make his familys grieving one hell of alot harder.

It's a horrible tragedy, but maybe kids who watched the show will finally learn how to respect wild animals. Despite his constant disregard for dangerous wild animals, and the wrong messages he was sending to kids over the years, maybe this last accident will actually send the right message.
RIP

i just cant believe hes dead, its wild. the guy had more compassion for animals than a heck of a lot of people do for other human beings! hes taking the world of animals a step forward!

not suprised or phased in the slightest. still a shame, as he obviously meant alot to so many people. RIP crazy dude, i personally imagined a cobra would have taken you out

"Crikey! That's one big sting ray. Watch as I sneak up on it, start screaming and moving erratically then I'll try to ride it while it's all pissed off!"
