At the same time, not only are you talking to a family member..... you're talking to a female. We all know that honesty is the best policy here, but we have to be careful how we deliver a potentially criticizing comment to a family member. Family will always be there for you, so it's best that you keep that bridge intact. Very hard to do sometimes, though, so don't beat yourself up about it.
Do this: Be the first one to apologize. That'll mean more to her than what you initially said.
