Dirt Bike or a Quad -- what do you prefer???

I am thinking of gettinf either a dirt bike or a quad. I am looking into the z400 and raptor 700 for quads and the kawasaki 250f dirt bike. I can't decide between a quad or a bike. Those who ride what do you ride?

quads are fun cuz you can ride in the mud and rough terrain, bad thing about a bike is you have to have a some what clean area to ride, i wouldnt trail ride with a liquid cooled dirt bike so if you have somewhere to ride a bike then hell ya i live in the country so majority of my friends live on farms so thats where i used to ride and couple buddies had tracks but i've had a blast riding quads in the rain and riding the woods and creeks etc

I will be riding the quad mostly in Vermont, on steeper terrain and trails so I think the quad will be a better choice.

absolutly rediculous, power was insane, center of gravity is out of whack that was poor design i think and definately takes an advanced rider to know how to handle it. if your new to the world of atvs definately not the bike for you, i've never owned a quad but im pretty fearless and that bike kinda scared me. they're top heavy and very throttle responsive which is a good thing but like i said if your new to it its easy to let it get away from u or get hurt....my other buddy has a 400ex and that bike is nice, plenty of power, quick and fun, and doesnt flip over nearly as easy as that raptor did

Thanks for the compliment. Very good point about the raptor, i rode the raptor before i bought the Banshee and i also didn't like the way the center of gravity is situated, i personally think that the raptor may flip easy if not careful and thats why i went with the Banshee.....it's comfortable and very fast and there is alot of modifications you can do to make it faster.

Actually just bought my first quad today. Bought a 2005 KFX-400 off my fiancee's cousin for a good price. Don't know much about quads yet to offer good advice but I'm really excited about my new toy and can't wait to go riding next week. Every told me quads are the way to go tho...dunno?

Congrats on your new quad!! I personally like quads better than dirt bikes because i just feel it's better and safer to rip it up on four wheels. Post some pics of your quad so we can check it out.

Good point about the safety factor...Cuz I sure the heck can't afford to get hurt right now hehe. Well, don't have any pics handy right now (as I dropped it off at my friends garage today where I'm storing it). Promise to have pics soon of me in action tearing shit up Let me ask you though....are you a big fan of the nerf bars? A buddy of mine who I'm going out with next wk to ride with keeps telling me they are an absolute MUST. What do you think?

I wouldn't say a must but yes i think they are very good to have because god forbid something happens while your riding your feet won't get caught under the tires or jammed in anywhere and messed up. I would get them if i were you.

Yeah, quads and trikes just feel wierd for me too when going over jumps. I just feel like if something goes wrong on a dirt bike, I can correct it easier than a quad. IE decent angle, POF angle, ect. Probably just the lighter weight...

I'd love to pick up a dual purpose Suzuki in the spring, if the wife will let me.

I raced semi-pro/pro motocross for about five years and personally find two wheels to be far safer than four. The quads are a blast but they are much heavier and you are restricted to trails wide enough for the quad. As for jumping and such, you have a greater deal of control of the bike in the air than you will a quad. Also, I've seen hundreds of wrecks/crashes and my memory is that quads seem to land on their riders where you can get away from your bike easier (plus on a bike, your feet can escape easier than with the general ergonomics of the quad.

If your new to riding, I'd go with a good two stroke enduro model or motocross bike in the 125-250cc range. IMHO, four strokes (thumpers) are a pain in the ass to work on where you can do a top end job on a two stroke in an hour. Also, if you're new to riding, try a few out and see if you really need more than 125cc. I rode 125/250 and open class and weighed about 110lbs and I never rode a 500 but could compete with them on the 125 and definately the 250 (just depended on the course).

LOL. Once I raced my 80 in the open class and ralized too late that I was going to have to clear this 70ft double to compete. Scary, scary scary....wide open in 6th and barely making it each lap. I came in second.............and the dude with the blond pony tail that beat me riding a 250 ended up being a chick!

Thanks for the info. What do you think of Kawasaki bikes -- the 250f or 250 2 stroke? I am still undecided as far as a bike or a quad though...

well man i got alot of shit(01 honda 400ex, 99 yamaha banshee,89 quad racer 250 @ 500, 85 big red @ sx,99 300 fourtraxx 4x4 and the new 700 honda 4x4 also have a 00 cr250 and a 01 kx250.) kinda my pashtion I guess. I think you would be alot better off with the z400. there is a shit load of work to be done to keep up a dirtbike made for racing. you will have alot more fun because you will get to ride it more.
