What mixed martial art is good to start out with?

I want to get into fighting and do not have any prior experience other than bouncing (you see a lot of fights but rarely do you have to fight, and even then you have 10 guys who have your back) the occasional bar/street fight. I am not the best fighter and want to remedy that, as well as the stress relief benefits it provides. So I want to alternate the gym and mma/boxing every other day.

So what is the best martial art to start out in? I would want something that is practical in the real world. I was thinking kick boxing or brazilian jiu jitsu? I am also 24, is that too late for me to start?

Any input would be great, thanks.

Whats the primary difference in style between muay thai and bjj? which would be more fit for a beginner, or does it matter?

Being really basic, bjj is takedowns, locks and submissions, muay thai is strikes, punches, kicks, knees etc.

A client of mine runs a martial arts studio. He teaches Kung Fu, Boxing, Kick boxing, muay thai, and jujitsu. It's not BJJ though. I was thinking taking Kickboxing/Muay thai and jujitsu. Is jujitsu by itself worth it or should I find a place that teaches gracie/bjj ?

BJJ is great for takedowns, and what do do when you are down.

Muay thai will teach you how to strike someone extreamly well.

if you look for a bjj school... try to find an instructor who trained under more agressive gracies... for instants ...royce's style is very lax... not every blackbelt teaches that way. If you have a school linked to Caique...he's a good patch to follow.

for bouncing bjj is the way to go. forget fighting an unruly patron just choke em out. an elbow slice or knee from muay thai is good also but you tend to get blood on your clothes. seriously bjj for ground and muay thai for stand up. most bjj schools have vale tudo or mma classes.

i think most gracie have a good style but cant go wrong with instructors under Machados, Jacare, many more but do your research see what team wins all your local tourny. try that school if you dont like it try another one.

depends on what you want to do with the customers..

strikes and punching is always fun, and can be very debilitating..

however if you need to go to court because you maimed a guy while working as a bouncer, you should never have any record of having recieved training in anything.. train under an alias...

grappling, locks and submission are the way to go to control someone...
