Engine making squeaking noise....
Theres a squeak coming from my engine, sounds like its coming from behind the engine block. My friend use to work for Ford, he said its probably the flywheel. Anyone have any opinions on the matter?

1) what kind of squeak?
2) what kind of car do you have?
3) does it squeak when you're parked, when moving, or both?
4) does the squeak change as the engine increases its rpm's?
5) does it squeak when you hit a bump?
6) how long has it been since you replaced the fan belt (how many miles is on it)?
Sometimes you can get a squeak from a bearing in the alternator, or the belts just get old and need to be replaced. In general, if something was wrong with the engine and something was squeaking inside it, you probably wouldn't be able to hear it. I'd guess it's coming from something on the outside of the engine . . .
But tell us more about this thing . . .

Well, if it's 80,000 miles, and if you don't know if the belts were replaced before you bought it, it would be a good idea if you went ahead and changed 'em out, anyway. They don't last forever, y'know . . .
If they are slipping, you might could try getting a can of belt dressing from your local auto parts shop. It's just a spray can of stuff, you spray it on the belt according to directions on the can. If it's the belt that's making the noise, the dressing will usually quiet it right down, and then you'll know for sure what the problem is. At that point, ya, you really need to change it out.
And while you're changing the belt, you really ought to change out the hoses. They're only good for 90,000 miles, and one thing you don't want is for a hose (or a belt) to pop while you're bopping along the freeway, miles from home. And while you're doing that, you may as well have the coolant changed out, too. That's something that needs to be done every 30,000 miles, else crud builds up inside your engine and you get other problems . . .
The only other things that come to mind would be the bearing on the alternator, or maybe something with the clutch, like the clutch throw-out bearing. That's a bearing that goes out early when you ride the clutch pedal a lot. I'm assuming you've checked all the fluid levels, like the power steering fluid . . .
About the only other thing that could squeak that comes to mind would be the water pump, and that would probably expire before you heard anything. A flywheel is just a big heavy plate that's attached to the crankshaft, that the clutch presses up against, and usually the big problems with them are warping, and sometimes oil gets dripped on 'em, which makes the clutch slip. Can't picture anything that would make it squeak . . .
Ya, if your bro hadn't replaced the belts in the recent rebuild, I'd do that, and see if that fixes the problem. If replacing the belts makes the squeak disappear, and the problem reappears in a little while, well, that means that something that was rebuilt wasn't put back together quite right, and that's another ball of wax . . .
Oh, and then you might get a mechanic's stethoscope ($3.99 at Northern Tools)
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...DF&cm_ite=auto
and see if you can pinpoint where the sound is coming from.
That's about all that comes to mind right now . . . maybe someone else has some ideas . . .
