Lifting Weights and Smoking...
A friend of mine noticed the gains I was making in the gym and wanted to start working out with me. So, being the observant ARR board member that I am, I made sure his diet, routine, and all that good stuff was in check before we ever stepped foot in the gym. Everything was in place except one thing, he's a smoker. Not heavy, maybe 4 or 5 a day. I told him he should quit, which he assured me he would. During about our third workout together he asked me what the reason was that he needed to quit smoking, to which I told him what I was always told, that you can't workout as hard if you smoke, thus hindering your gains. He brought to my attention the fact that he was going just as hard, if not harder than I was (which I'll admit, he was... the guy's an animal) and I didn't really know what to say... so I told him it will stunt his growth and make him impotent lol but seriously, I never really learned the science behind it... is there anyone who has a solid answer or experience either way? Is there anyone who smokes or know anyone who smokes and actually makes gains? If I'm wrong then I don't want to lie to the guy, but I just don't know what to tell him. Any help?

I've read somewhere that smoking causes less oxygen to get to muscles which in turn hinders muscle growth, development, and recovery but don't hold me to that information!

Smoking obviously hinders endurance, and leads to way bad health.
Now, if you wanted to go run 5 miles, he might be in trouble. But as far as lifting, I wouldnt see it affecting muscles much as in weights....maybe slightly, but nothing to worry about.

Nicotine is also a CNS stimulant... Training already affects the CNS... Over-stimulation leads to CNS exhaustion (though i'm not sure that's the correct term for it).
Smoking depletes the levels of b (stress) complex vitamins and anti-oxidants additionally. Oxidative damage can influence recuperative abilities to say the least.
There're a host of reasons.

smoking just isnt good.
How is smoking legal when it claims most of the deaths today? Yet, juice isn't, and not 1 death can be related to juice.
The world is a messed up place.

To Conclude: Smoking is linked to cancer, cardiovascular disease, heart damage, inadequate testosterone levels and poor insulin metabolism; these factors must equate to poor results from bodybuilding.

Sounds like he should come over to Japland. Most of the gyms have smoking areas and cigarette machines, so people can get a few puffs inbetween sets. (Not joking.)

b. everyone stays away from me 'cause I'm the lone gaijin, and
c. I grunt when I lift and it scares the Japanese.

smoking is bad for overall health, but i have seen examples of people who were regular smokers still maden WAY above average muscle gains in size and strength without the use of aas. now the question is, would these people have made better gains if they didnt smoke? to be honest i coulndt say either way.

Also an apetite suppressant. If he wasn't smoking, he'd be eating more and making better gains.
Smoking is useless, and digusting. The money he spends on it could go towards suppliments, aas, food, or otherthings.

honestly i would say from personal experience the difference is negligible at best. i've made great gains when i was younger without any supp's smoking up a storm. obviously it's better not to smoke, but it's not like it's going to do shit either way in terms of anabolism.

i smoked for 8 years, and i used to lift and smoke. then in july i quit and started lifting again. and my endurance has increased greatly. if i go and have a smoke anytime close to working out, it affects my whole workout. he prolly doesnt notice it cause he only smoked 4-5 a day, thats not alot. but hes still much better off smoking nothing at all

Absolutly true, smoking constrict the vessels on the face,so you dont have the same blood supply to the skin,so skin cells die, making a lot of wrinkles. Now combine this with tanning and you get a very nice 20's or 30's y/o girl with the skin of a 60's or even 70's y/o woman, and then they ask you what they can do to improve the skin....well,..theres nothing to do,..plastic surgery... maybe.Im not joking,i see every day.
