What you do for a living?

I rarely visit this board even though i work in IT. So i thought i would make a post and ask everyone what you do for a living (IE: Networking, Programmer etc)

I landed a sweet gig at a particular NFL team doing Desktop support. I see lots of "stars" but know shit about them, i don't like football but it is very interesting to see how much actually goes into a football team. It's gonna look good on the resume.

I'm a network/systems engineer for AT&T. I'm a CCIE (routing and switching #13894), CCNP, CCNA, and currently working on the CCVP (Cisco Certified Voice Professional). I design large, complex voice and data networks for AT&T Enterprise customers, mainly focusing on IP Telephony and VoIP using AT&T's MPLS, OPTEMAN, GIGAMAN and other WAN technologies. Been with them for almost 9 years now. It's a good job and I'm very thankful to have it.

I went from a Systems Engineer II to a Systems Engineer III after passing the CCIE, which resulted in a $10K salary increase. I passed the CCIE written on my first attempt, but didn't pass the lab until my 3rd attempt.

I have several Cisco switches and routers in my home lab that I'd be willing to sell to you for a really good deal. A perfect setup for those looking to obtain their CCNA or CCNP. Let me know if you're interested.

hey muriloninja...if you ever need a job in texas involving cisco, let me know...my company (getronics) does outsourced cisco tac.

Dont feel bad thats normal. The CCIE Voice exam has an intial pass rate of 7%. I presume your CCIE was Routing and Switching. The pass rate for Cisco employee's is 10% higher as well.

Yeah: I'm a CCIE (routing and switching #13894).

The problem with the routing and switching lab test is that you're forced to configure older routed and routing protocols that you no longer find in a real customer environment (RIPv1, IGRP). So having to relearn (or even learn for the first time) for the exam was quite the beating.

I work closely with Cisco's account teams in the Dallas area (I work for AT&T by the way). And yes, I've called Cisco's TAC SEVERAL times. I have a small Cisco Call Manager Express system in my house with a few 7920 wireless phones for study purposes. It'll be on the market soon, though, as I need money for my child adoption stuff!

Yeah some of the protocols are pretty lame although you would be surprised, there are still quite a few RIP networks out there. Think yourself lucky, they only just got rid of Apple Talk a few years ago.

Student at the University of Tampa currently in the Pre-Professional Allied Health program with intents of going to USF and enrolling in the school or Physcial Therapy(So much school ahead of me =/) Im pretty lucky though as my step-mom works in moffet hospital over there so I kinda have an advantage over some other potential students/ Seasonal modeling, either back at home for the holidays or occasionally Ill fly in if the income outweighs the time and expenses/Abercrombie & Fitch greeter at the 5th Ave store in Manhattan ( I do absoultely nothing but look nice, hit on chics, wear free clothes that they provide for clothes they want to promote...oh yeah 15$ an hour plus time 1/2 on Sundays...cant complain for the summers.

On a more serious note...alot of the guys on this forum are much older, wiser and more intelligent when it comes to the real world than I. This may sound like a typical question but, whats a good major I could possibly switch to or consider as a profession that will enable me to make a good living as opposed to many college grads who start at 28k a year. Basically im just asking for whats demanding on the market and has alot of potential to grow in that market. Im pretty intelligent, versatile and determined to do what it takes in order for me to live successful and happy.

Believe me when i say that piece of paper is worth jack shit in this field, the first thing i was asked on my new gig was "What is your skill set" and my answer was "well i have a degree in Networking" and the reply was "So, what is your skill set".

Experience beats a loan piece of paper anyday IMO.

If you do not have much exp at this time, i would highly suggest you start "networking" with people in your field and offer to work for free just for the exp and ask them if they would write you a letter of recommendation.
