I suppose going to Best Buy and getting one of those box systems will be your best bet. Under $500 wont buy u squat for quality, decent ones start at like, $1,200. But your in college right? I know it sucks =(

What I would demand is that the receiver should have multiple fiber optic inputs for other devices such as DVD players, satellite receivers, game consoles, etc. Most good receivers have multiple fiber optic and digital coaxial inputs. For receivers, I'd attempt to find a packaged Onkyo or Harmon Kardon system. If you can spend a little extra, a package Denon system would be great.
SVT is right in that the packaged deals (receiver and speaker bundle) is the best bang for the buck. A good subwoofer alone can run you around $300-400 if purchased separately. Also, if possible, attempt to find you a packaged deal that includes a powered subwoofer. Those passive subwoofers (passive meaning that it draws its power from the receiver) are not nearly as good as a sub that contains its own power. Might be impossible, though, due to your budget.
Be ready to spend some money on the required cables to interconnect your devices. A fiber optic or digital coaxial cable will run you anywhere from $30-50 depending on the length that you require. So keep that in mind.
Good luck!
