    French Foreign Legion?

Anyone know anything about the french foreign legion....

I grew up in a military family and I've always wanted to join up....unfortunately I have a firearms ban in the UK which precludes me from joining the British Army....and University just ain't stimulating me..

I doubt I'll do it, it just keeps popping into my head.....anyone ever serve in it? or know anyone who has?

I've got the article right here from the french embassy in washington dc
    The volunteer must:
-be between the ages of 17 and 40 years old
-hold a valid official identity card
-be physically fit for duty wherever he may be needed
-knowledge of the french language is not necessary because will be acquired during the contract.

i almost at one was going to join but luck for me i woke up. here is a link to learn a little about the legion http://www.foreignlegionlife.com/

if you are serious then this is the link you will need to begin the process, you must make your own way to the intake station. good luck after 5 years of service you can have a new identy if you so choose.

I'd sign up for a different military. The US military has alot of great jobs. Wish the Canadian military would have the same jobs available.

    Hopefully soon though!

I watched a documentary on the French Legions...recruits have better than a 1 in 80 chance of being killed in action through the course of their contract.
Some other statistics that I vaguely remember, but I know it would take some balls to put yourself up against some of them statistics...being routinely dropped in any hotspot around the globe.

If killed or captured, no repercussions for the French..you're a foreigner.

I'd call it as about as close to a dispensable mercenary as you're going to get.

the foreign legion is supposedly the most brutal military operation to be a part of. i have a friend who was in it, he is a very nice guy on the surface, but is one mean mo fo when needs be. once finished with your service, you are entitled to french citizenship. thats IF you live that long

Well there some things to think before joining!

Your first contract is 5 years, after you can receive the french nationality, most of the soldiers do, so after their initial contract they are french citizen.

for the first five years, you cannot have a wife, you live on base, get free lodging, food etc... After the five year, initial contract you can ask to get a lodging outside the military and get married.
