    format, reinstall, then format, install fedora, then format

    or better yet.. steal the hard drive, and install a new one from a different computer... or just a new drive..

    Can't format and reinstall. All the software is pushed from a network - so I don't have any disks.

    ::Cough cough:: bittorrent....

    i'm sorry, but formatting a thousand times is the only way you're ever going to get that thing as clean as you want.

    Formatting doesn't do anything but erase. Data is never gone until you write over it. Anyone can get at erased data.

    Download . com has a ton of share ware that writes over every blank space on your hard drive, some of them seven times over.

    Did you guys know about these? Are they not sufficient?

    formating is good enough...yes the data is never really gone but do you really think they give a sh*t bout 1 employee's data enough to try to recreate the formated data? Seriously... not.... So i'd just format and leave it blank
    let them put a new image on it (which i'm sure they have an image file for already).

    if you are really paranoid... just low level format the f*cker and let them replace the drive

    It does'nt matter how many times you format, there are ways to retreive data. I have heard of the NSA having the ability to retreive data off a HDD that had sat in salt water for an extended period of time but like Zimmy said, they are not gonna go through the trouble of retreiving your old data.

    You might be surprised.

    Formatting is not an option, as there is confidential and proprietary data (which I created) on the computer. It it's gone, It'll be trouble.

    Format with zero all data is enough. After the format reinstall the OS right before returning it. You'll piss off the IT department if you return it with a blank HD.

    Then WTF start this thread? Buy software that throughly trashes data so it can't be recovered and trash the files you don't want them to see.
