It's a good question, but it is sometimes being answered incorrectly. English is a language. American English, British English, Australian English, etc. are varieties of the English language. Thus, you can't really say, "I speak American," as it isn't a language. It is more correct to say, "I speak American English."

Accents (dealing only with pronunciation) are largely indicative of gross language varieties. So you may be able to identify a person's nationality by their accent (e.g., Brit vs Kiwi), and you could even get more specific with regards to geographical location if you were familiar with a certain area, for example Brooklyn vs Queens.

However, dialects (a combination of vocabulary, accent, spelling, grammar, etc.) are highly subjective. As a result of mass media, air travel, etc., particular dialects are dying out. At present, there isn't a real consensus on dialect. Some argue that there are only two dialects of English; British (encompasing the U.K., Australia, and NZ) and North American (the U.S. and Canada). Others argue that the distinction can be made at the level of nationality and still others argue that the distinction can be made at the regional level or lower.

Say for example in Brooklyn a particualr word meant one thing but in Queens it meant something else is that dialect or does the word have to be meaningless in Queens classify as dialect.

Not important to the original question... Im just curious LOL
