You should be banned for using the term "tone up".

^^^ I was about to say the same thing. *sigh* damn womens magazines.

There is no such thing as 'tone'.. tone implies building muscle. but the same women don't want to eat much. so its pointless. settle for weight loss. or she wouldn't go half bad eating at maintenance if you say shes skinny. why start her on dumbells for squats? forget it... bodyweight squats then a bar.. work up from there. if she starts on your basic compound movements... she will hit every muscle without overkill. heavy (for her) 6-10 reps. 3-5 sets. 2-3 times a week. full body rotation.

other than that depends alot on how serious she is. body recomposition isn't just about weights and cardio. diet counts for a heck of alot. if she doesn't eat much - which I'm suspecting she doesn't. then I wouldn't suggest much in the way of cardio at all. maybe 2 or 3 light sessions a week absolute max.

banned for using tone up? pfft. i know what tone up means b.t.w., she just wants 'definition' -- I'll try what you said tru2, today i had her on the machines, and squats using bar(guided not free). It seemed to work. She just doesnt want to get huge, and im trying to tell her building a little muscle will only help in her physique, not hurt.

well definition still implies building muscle. never mind.. semantics.

guided? you mean smith machine?? I wouldn't do that. don't teach her bad habits. smith machines should be outlawed. move her over to a free bar.. she will learn to use her abs at the same time.. tell her that anyway.

tell her she won't get 'huge' .. the heavier she lifts as long as she keeps it in the low rep ranges.. the less likely she will get even close to big.

IMO - laps of lunges around the gym (4 laps EOD). Have her eat more balanced meals that include smaller portions all day long.

Getting huge is a process and takes years. A few months, even a couple of years will not get her huge so she has nothing to worry about. Tell her to pick up some weights, break a sweat and put in some hard work. It just takes time.

if she wants instant results she should get a pair of nordic walking poles and do that. i've been ****ing around with x-country ski poles and hiking because i have shin splints and ****ed knees right now, and it really is everything it's cracked up to be. you burn about 40% more calories than if you tried to just speed walk but feel less tired, you're right in the fat burning zone, it's loosens up your upper body, and it reduces pressure on your back and knees.
