Like, sort of and sort of like

What is happening to the english language when every other word or statement has to be prefixed with "sort of", "like", or "sort of like". Its not just chavs, gangbangers and the generally uneducated you even see the tv presenters and newsreaders doing it. To make things worse people even have to type it too. What makes one think that they wont be understood properly unless they use these prefixes. Read any thread and you will see the "like's" everywhere.

What makes this sentence "I pressed 200 pounds on bench today." harder to understand than this one "I pressed like 200 pounds on bench today." Can anyone who uses these prefixes tell me why they do and if they even realise they are doing it.

Just irritates the shit out of me (rant rant) now stop it all of you.. Its not big and its not clever.

You should invest some time into: http://www.ventanger.com

But, like, I like, know what you, like, mean.

But seriously, it's either ignorance, stupidity, or people trying to fit in that use that "word" every other second.

That's not that hard to understand.

Honestly, I talk to atleast one client a day, who uses the phrase "used-ta-could" or "might-could."
I'd much rather talk to a valley girl who uses "like" or "totally" anyday.

yeh i found for communication purposes, if you like the person your talking to, DONT focus on thier crutch words, because they'll misinterpret your ADD towards them as you not caring about what they have to say, thus destroying rapport with people.
there is a certain point however where IT IS PERFECLTY ok to tell a person, "like look, the crutch words need to DIE NOW, you know what im saying?" most of the time people do it so subconsciously they dont even know, some people are nervous and get worse (if your an authority) some people are just dumb, some people get mad. either way, like.. fvck em.
