There are many different distributions available. But if you are just getting familiar with Linux http://www.ubuntu.com is a pretty good distro.

There are tons of distros. They're all pretty much free. Fedora is good for starters. Ubuntu is alright. There's tons out there. Just google it and you'll find the main site for it, and there should be a downloads section. It's all about finding a distro that meets your needs and wants.

Most distro's have a torrent file, so you can just download the torrent from there.

if you were doing it as part of a college course... i'd suggest you go redhat... it's the most known one in the IT industry and the companies that do use Unix as an OS usually use redhat. You can get it at www.redhat.com

Newsbin Pro http://newsbin.com/ , Newsgroup Service with unlimited downloads http://www.giganews.com/ , and Newzbin(find everything you want super fast) http://www.newzbin.com/ . If you can't find stuff on newsgroups then it doesn't exist or really old or unpopular. But thing that sucks about unlimited downloads is that if you have Comcast they might call you up and bitch that your downloading too much, happen to me, my friend and my cousin.
