After doing a few heavy sets and resting about a minute my heart rate waas about 144 bpm. Is this too much?

That's a good thing. Heck, I have some of my best work outs when I keep my heart rate up with minimal rest in between sets. It pretty much equates to a cardio session while lifting weights.

Its fine as long as your not holding your breath throughout a lift. This is known as a valsalva manuever and is bad for the ticker and vessels in the head.
