What happen to the hardcore gyms

Always wondered what happen to the old school gyms-leaking pipes and pictures of freaks, while heavy metal plays in the back ground. I feel like the gyms of today are like night clubs---Shit maybe I'm just getting old---

    yea, gettin old...

and there is big $$$ to be made selling someone that can dance 4 times a month the same membership you'd get from a bunch of guys who were always dropping your weights, and bending your bars..

go figure.. it's a family experience now..

There's no money in hardcore gyms anymore. Working out like said before is now a 'family' activity and more geared towards house wives, people willing to pay for the extra additives, and fun colors and classes at the gym. It's all about business tactics and marketing strategies. And for the 5 truly 'hardcore' people that go to a gym, does not make it worth it.

Like one poster said, hard core members come every day, scare off other members and wear out equipment right or wrong, if I owned a gym I would want the fat lazy people that sign contracts and do eft's and never use the club

eft-electronic funds transfer payed each month

Yep. Gym owners seem to not like me

They'd prefer the fatties that pay for the fact to tell everyone they belong to a gym and exercise..but go maybe once every other month

I think we are a dying breed. Most people just want to be in shape (for real or just think they are) girls like the skinny cut dudes the best ( I know we all get our share, just stating that a lean, cut guy with decent build gets the nod.)

That's the truth It's not just the young chics anymore (18-22) that like that look but women in their 30's do too

I'm with you here brother. Luckily there are still a few hardcore gyms here in Central Fl. other wise I would be buying equipment for my garage. nothing worse than the modern fitness facility where everyone looks the same year after year! Actually I've been talking to a few of my workout partners about getting a space for our style of training... invitation only. Loud metal playing, chalk everywhere, squat rack, power rack, bench press, deadlift platform, heavy dumbbells 200 lbs+, with blood sweat and tears on the floor!!! now that's a gym.

    *Moves to Florida*

I wanna find a gym so badly that carries heavy dumbbells. To like 180 or so I'd be in heaven. Theres a deadlift platform at a gym back home...and dbs to 130..which is the highest ive seen..decent but not good enough imo. They get annoyed at the chalk tho

I want to own a gym in the future and have an upstairs and a basement. the upstairs would be for the everyday bums and downstairs would be a VIP that I would give passes for the hardcore guys so they wouldn't have to wait for the kid doing bicep curls on the bench or talking to his group of 5 friends just straight hardcore gym in the pit

Can you give me an example of "fun colors"

Actully my gym has some pretty "fun colors" itself, and its more geared towards women.. which in a way sucks, they have a huge selection of freeweights but there db only go up to 100. and brutus the barber owns my gym! and he wrestled hogan in wrestlemania # 2. so i asked him if we could increase the free weights, he said he'd think about it.... aka no. and l. but i kind of like it... i mean im not one of those guys who goes to the gym to see chicks... but hey its a plus

Ive been to 4 gyms in the past several months. Not one of them had DBs that were heavier than 110lbs. 2 of them have a ban on deadlifts. WTF! When I asked about it, the wannabe always says, "Our gym is an estrogen freindly gym...we dont want guys yelling in here."

Honestly I could lift in any gym even if it was the Barbie doll house edition as long as they had the equipment I need give or take. The main problem is the people some are really cool some are either dicks or don't pay attention to what thety are doing

Our gym now finally goes up to 130s but, only a handfull of people use them correctly it's all about the atmossphere I mean here at school its mostly all stupid kids who don't do things right and theres no need to have weight higher than that. Out of the all of kids I see at the gyms on campus there might be a small handfull of people that use that kind of weight correctly and safely.

well they need to be told to shove that rule right up their ass and then have their gym either burned down or taken over in a hostile coup

I lift at a powerlifting gym thats as hardcore as you can get pretty much while still being able to lift. The place isnt falling apart but it's intense. Everywhere you look there are benches or squat racks, or platforms. DB's for miles to 150lbs. Chalk pits, chains, a vast array of bands, a deadlift loader bar, different bars for all sorts of variations of lifts. It's badass. I've been working out there for 2 yrs and never wanna leave. Going away to school every year tho makes me love it even more tho.

Yeah, back at home in Staten Island there was one good gym called Johnny Lats(Funny name I know). Place was enormous had 5 flat benches, many inclines, deadlift platform, few powerracks and 3 sets of dumbells to 160. Unfortunately it closed down and I only got to expierience it for 1 year when I was 17. The people in that gym taught me alot and it was just a gym with great equipment. Now im in my school gym that has enough to get the job done....although they lack short bench and pulldowns or rows which kinda makes back boring after deads.

The one thing that kills me though is the kids who are 170 or less benching 205 for their last set of 2 getting off the bench in there beater and flecing in the mirror for a minute while eyeing everyone in the gyming basically saying yeah im tough i can **** you up blah blah blah.

My rule of thumb is, anyone under 170 for cant bench 225 squat 315 or dead 315 can not be tough under any circumstances.

Im not tough to you then CoreyTampa
