Anyone had eye surgery? LASIK? PRK?

Well like i said in one of my previous threads, i will be trying to enter the SEALs program. However i need to have corrective eye surgery before i enlist. I was wondering if anyone knows if their is an age requirement or if u just have to wait till urs eyes stop changing. I know i need to see my doctor about this however i was just gonna see wat yall had to say bout it. thanks

I was talking to my wife about that today, cause Im interested, she said there are 2 ladies at her work that got it 4 years ago and they have to wear glasses again, granted I dont know if they went to a top doctor or what, and exactly what procedure they got? But im interested in it also. I get sick of contacts and glasses, also im sure it has come along way in 3-4 years

This will require a waiver and will delay your entry if you vision is passable live with . The waiver will require you to have six months to a year after the surgery before you are considered for entry again. talk with your requiter and see what he/she has to say. If your older than 7 Id say its not an age thing Id say its just bad vision.

I had lasik eye surgery and its the best choice I ever made in my life, you have to see with your surgeon first to see if you qualify for lasik eye surgery.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!! DO NOT GET LASIK!!! GET PRK!!!!!

The reason I say this is because our pilots in the Marines get PRK when there vision get bad as they get older, the military pays for it. The reason they can not get lasik is because lasik has been known to cause vision problems in altitude changes when flying. The same goes for when you are diving as a SEAL, the pressure changes could effect your vision with lasik. PRK is more painful, but actually a better procedure as far as results go. But bottom line, talk with your doctor, and what ever you do, do not tell the Navy you had it done, because you will be immediately disqualified from the BUDS program.

Can you not get a waiver for BUD/s? Also they do an eye exam and they can tell if uve had surgery or not

best money ive spent. REMEMBER u get what you pay for! so my advice is don't take the cheapest price. the money your spending is not for the surgeon anyone can perform the procedure -what your paying for is the technology of the laser (more expensive means better lazer). thats my advice. good luck.

im also thinking about lasik very soon. i can never find that sweet spot of vision with glasses, so im hoping the eye surgery will do it. is it painful at all?

and i have always wanted to rock sunglasses

also whos the youngest person to get it on here?. im 21 and i hear it might be to early.

PRK is NOT a better procedure. it is older and has far more complications and is less expensive, which is why the govt gives it for free. its a much less skilled procedure. i cant comment on the pressure changes. check these links out..... it seems the army allows both.

ur optimoligist will do some tests to see if u r ready for the surgery he told me that the rule of thumb is if ur feet have stopped growing chances are ur eyes have stopped growing as well of course this isnt scientific but he said that 90% of his cases when his patients eyes quit growing so did there feet

There are up's and downs to both.

I had PRK done because after wearing contacts for so long my cornea's were pretty thin, just on the borderline of being thick enough for lasik.

with Lasik there is a flap that never heals in your cornea, which if poked just the right way could get ripped off. With PRK there is no flap made, but the recovery time is longer since the laser actually burns off the outer layer of the corner in the areas its working in.

It definately was probably the best thing i've bought myself in a long time tho. As far as age limits go, there is no real limit, but your prescription has to have been stable and not changed for at least 2 years.

I used Dr. Moadel in NYC, office is in the 40's.
