    Sleep Apnea

For those who don't know what it is: sleep apnea or sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally, "without breath"), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep.

Ever since Ive gained some weight from my current cycle I have had a few episodes of waking up and not being able to breathe. I know thick necks and torso are associated with the disorder. So I am curious if anyone else is suffering from this, since most of us fit that physical bill.

I have it... and Im only 188lbs...SA SUCKS real bad. Always tired. Very difficult to feel rested. I was told to use a CPAP (controlled breathing device) but they are difficult to sleep with. Beyond that I havent really found a solution. I suppose it will even get worse with age and weight. The surgery is suppose to be effective in only 20% of cases or something....

I had a pretty scary episode this morning, couldnt breathe for almost 40 seconds, I jumped up out of bed and almost thought I was going to have to call 911.....this was by far the worst case i've had.

Bro, Have you thought about doing a sleep study? They wire you up and record any episodes throughout the night! That info will tell the Doc what will help you get past this.

You should take apnea seriously. Not only does it wreck your sleep, but it can take decades off your life if untreated. If you're already waking up gasping for air regularly, you're probably on track for a massive heart attack in your sleep at 54 brought on by anpneic episode.

The good news is that a CPAP machine will completely treat it (once you get used to the machine). The available surgeries don't have very high cure rates by themselves, but combinations of them have success rates of 80% and higher. Do a seach on the 'Stanford protocol' for apnea treatment.

i think once i lose some weight it will alleviate much of the problem, as it has only really become noticeable as I have gained weight.

I am about 30lbs heavier than this picture, more bulky, but I am in the process of trying to cut some weight, so hopefully this helps.

For me, sleeping in the Strato-Lounger helps a lot. YMMV . . .

Well 8 months later, after some procrastination, seeing a sleep doctor, having a sleep study, waiting for insurance authorization, I finally got my CPAP machine. Needless to say I am excited to see what it does for me, and from what I am reading it may actually help me shed some fat....I'll give an update after about a month of using it.

I had sleep apnea, I found out by doing a sleep study. It turned out I would stop breathing 30 times an hour in my deepest sleep, enough to wake me up but I wouldn't be aware of it so I would just wake up really tired in the morning.

To fix it, I had to have plastic surgery on my jaw. When I would sleep, my jaw would relax and move back slightly and stop me from being able to breath. They sawed off my lower jaw right where my wisdom teeth used to be and moved it forward 1cm and screwed it back in and placed a bone plate in each opening. For my upper jaw, they literally sawed it right off my head and moved it forward 1cm as well to make sure my face stayed looking the same. They screwed it back in and I have so many screws my head right now. It's called maxillofacial jaw surgery and only used in rare cases of sleep apnea. It's usually done for cosmetic reasons or for people who have had an injury to their jaw.
