I ride a trek 5200, great bike. All ultegra componets. Paid like $2200 two seasons ago. I don't think they make the 5200 anymore, the carbon fiber bikes start at the madone now. I love trek's, but there are a lot of good bikes out there.

i had a raleigh that my old roomate sold me. he used to compete so the bike had alot of good stuff on it. im not really into bikes other then riding them. so im not sure what all it had. but it was a great bike.

It all depends what you want to pay and how much you are going to use it. I ride a lot and I decided I needed to have a carbon fiber frame. You can get an aluminum bike that will have decent stuff on it for 700-1000. You can go nuts with a custom titanium frame, all the best components and wheels, and spend 8 grand.

The big difference between aluminum and carbon is aluminum is a metal that can fatigue fail, so they need to make the bike more rigid. You feel a little more road vibration and it gives a more rough ride. I rode an aluminum bike before this one, it wasn't that bad.
