    Computer Fried????

Ok I HAD a 5 year old Dell 4500 and the other day the thing just quit while I was surfing the internet. If you open the case the Idiot lights come on to show that there is power and you have the case popped open. Plus my keyboard lights up but I cannot get the power to come on by pressing the power button. I am using a Bro's tower until I buy a new one, but I would like to see if I really need to buy one. Any Ideas?

    Check the power supply.
Its common on those 4500s for the Power supply to go out.

Get a power supply tester or order a replacement part for that model

If the keyboard is lighting up and lights are coming on, I don't think the power supply is out. Those things plug into the motherboard, which gets power form the power supply.
Do you smell a burnt smell? Something on the motherboard might have blown out.

I've dealt with these POFS dells, yeh you can see the light on the mobo too, its on.
Still power supply isn't working the way it should.
I suggest changing the power supply, if it just went out on u one day and u did nothing.
If it was heat the pc would just shutdown to prevent damage to the CPU.
Start with the powersupply first, if its not the Power supply, dells shitty capicators sometimes pop and the mobo need to be replaced.

Does you pc POST, do you have anything on the video display, have you tried unplugging the 20 or 24 pin connector to the motherboard and reconnect it?

just because the keyboard light comes on does not rule out the power supply btw...

    can be 3 things

    1) power supply
    - either the wall is not supplying enough power to the computer ...maybe a bad surge protector or something
    - or the power supply itself isn't supplying enough juice
    2) bad memory
    3) bad processor

if NOTHING comes on screen it's probably 2 or 3. If it's more than 1 chip of memory... then i doubt it's memory. It would probably be the processor. If it's 1 chip it might be memory. If it's 5 years old you can replace both for under 100 bucs anyway :P

Honeslty if the computer is 5 yrs old just buy a new one. Don't even worry about picking up a PSU.

Your warranty is probably shot on that DELL. If you have the flow then buy a new desktop. They will charge you up the asshole for parts if the tech support lines even bother to find old stuff for you.

You said the power button doesn't power the machine. But how is your keyboard lighting up? Are you just not seeing anything on the screen? Fans spinning?

If it was memory it'd more than likely 'beep' at you, could well be a processor burn out [does the heatsink and fan look covered in dust?], however, could well be a dead PSU, but unlikely if you're getting power fed to the keyboard, mouse and any other devices, try taking a few USB devices out - see what happens - if you have a multisocket with some heavy duty electricals running off it with the computer it could cause it. Sounds like a dead processor :-(
