    slow computer

Alright guys, my family bought a new computer like 2 months ago. During the day, it runs REALLY slow. It takes videos from youtube forever to load. But late at night, when people usually aren't on the net, it seems to run faster.

Everyday I run Spysweeper, AdWare Alert 2007, and Trend Micro Antivirus everyday, but this doesn't seem to help. In fact, they never seem to find any spyware. We contacted Geek Squad (who just so happens to have installed this computer), but they are wanting to charge us $100 to talk with them over the phone. Sorry guys, not gonna happen since you guys are the ones that installed this computer!!!

What do you guys think? Is there anything that you can think of that is making this computer run slow?

Its an issue with your internet provider man not your computer.

    Is it a laptop?

    Are you running it wireless?

Plug it in and youll notice an increase in speed

Try to find out what it actually connecting at.

If i am correct charter is just like cable services? Most don't know that cable service "shares" its pipelines with other customers which can in turn slow you down. I have Comcast cable and have noticed this first hand. For example: when i come home from work and login, my internet is slower due to the fact that there are hundreds of other in my area doing the same thing at the same time. Then late at night if i do some gaming online my internet is super fast because everyone else is sleeping. It’s the one down fault to cable service.
Other things that can slow down your PC are programs running in the background. Trying pressing Alt + Ctrl +delete and see how many tasks you have running. You could also have an anti-virus programming planned to scan during the day which you of course would want to change to run at night. I think Norton by default starts a full system scan at 4:00pm.

Well it seems your internet is not running as fast as you want it too. This could be your computer OR internet causing it.

Never talk to those resellers. They linch you for everything you got.

So you run your virus scanner/spyware scanner (2 of them?)

Got a firewall installed? Any other things you notice wrong with your computer?

    do the following 1st :

    run disk clean up
    run disk defrag
    run CHKDSK utility
    do ipconfig /flushdns
    get : AVG free edition
get : spybot search and destroy
    get : adaware 2007

check speeds in your test soket also (thats the 1st phone point in yuor house. Remove th face plate and plug into the hidden one)

do all that and see what happpens. Failing that, try it in safe mode

Sorry for not updating sooner. But my computer seems to be running a lot better, and I haven't really done anything.

Could be contention ratio issues, if you have a 3000:1 contention ratio you could be sharing your capped rates with upto 2999 people; it doesn't really work that way [but theoretically it does] but it can certainly cause slow page loading on the net, also viruses playing with host files can do some damage too or being connected to a proxy and not knowing it!

if you are still kickin' around here bull. try installing a different web browser. i'm assuming you use "internet explorer" try installing "mozilla firefox".

    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

you can use both. doesn't take up that much room.

p.s. for brian.....you sure you know what's up bro? never heard on this contention ratio. and he said he runs his virus scanner....no other issues. just slow internet load.

Contention ratio is a possibility; i'm not suggesting it's definitely it - it depends on broadband provider and your package you use :-)

Contention ratio is simply explained here:

Cable is also the same principal, it has a contention ratio... >_<

If your net slows at peak times of the day, say 4pm when kids are back from school then it's likely the issue. Not adsl specific, just an example i'd hope you could understand :-)

Changing browser wont help you if you're ISP is a smelly pirate hooker, nor will running anti-virus, spyware or any other methods of bullshit you concoct ;-)

I bought a program at officemax that is called pc restoration, They had a 3 techs work on my pc for 16 hours and afterwards it ran like the day I took at out of the box. I think it cost $99.

actually my bad after rereading the original issue. charter is a shitty cable service with low speeds anyhow. shop around and switch providers. even though as dsm said his issue is probably long gone.

i am on shaw cable. and have never had issues with speeds at different times.

if you have cheap internet they will use contention ratios. it's just so far and few between where i live really.

    cheerz.

16 hours? and 3 techs? must have been a horrible and lazy shop. officemax will not fix your issue btw. bad advice.

yeah i used to deal with alot of charter customers and never heard of an issue with a specific website like youtube videos.

reformatting would be the last resort at the software end of things for the comp. this has to do with his isp and bandwidth and what not. i would just get a different provider. lots of better ones out there if this specific one is giving you issues.

Sounds like it could be the contention ratio effecting your Internet bandwidth. That would only effect the Internet though, everything else would run fine. If it is more then the Internet and your machine is running shitty, do a alt+ctrl+del and click on task manager. Look at your CPU and memory usage and also look at the processes running to see what is hogging the machine. Don't install any shitty tools. It could be a whole host of things but that is were to start. How long does it take to start up? also, you should post the specs of your machine.

For the Internet tests, Google 'speed test' and go to bandwidth place or one of the others and run it at different times of the day. Compare speed results and you will see if it is contention.....
