correct me im wrong...but i believe that smoking is an appetite suppressant

so we can conclude that when ppl quit smoking they feel hungrier, and in addition fill the void once held by smoking with food

as i understand it, this is the reason for weight gain when smoking.

if i were you i would worry about the cancer, high bp, heart disease, etc from smoking first, and then show some disclipline in turning to food for an escape

to more directly answer your question ive seen my friends quit smoking and some gained 5lbs over a few months, another gained 30-40lbs

    its up to the individual

yes, you will gain weight if you quit using nicotine - garaunteed

nicotine stops your body from feeling hungry

you can make gains with nicotine... and stay cut, but it is very slow going

you will gain much more off of it

if you just do a couple a day you will never get it out of your system because it takes 72 hours to leave your system... so doing a couple a day is not much different than 30 a day from a bb perspective

if you could successfully cut from25-30 a day to a couple a day, then why not just quit all together?

because nicotine is the most dependant substance in the world, you never want to completely let it go - it's very scary. i know... i gave it up 10 months ago... cold turkey

Do you have research on it being the "most dependent substance in the world"? That's hard to believe.

I quit smoking the day I started working out so ya I gained muscle but it was not from quitting smoking. The reason people gain weight when they quit smoking is because smoking supressess your appetite so when you quit you just eat more. Keep your diet in check and weight loss/gain will be in your hands.

On related topic I read a study in a Muscular Development magazine that stated smoking ciarettes increses testosterone. (though not a valid rason to keep smoking)

part of the reason for this is because it is so readily available in our society. you can't go anywhere without being able to purchase nicotine... plus tons of people use it openly in bars, etc.,... this make it very hard to escape and quit

Ok. It's not that I don't believe you. I've just seen MANY friends go through withdrawals from *apple pie* that makes them bed ridden and I've never heard of someone going through nicotine withdrawal that put them in bed.

Not sure who wrote this ...

    Nicotine as an Anti-estrogen/Anti-aromatase

Nicotine works in two ways to lower estrogen levels. First it is an anti-aromatase like arimadex. Nicotine has been shown to inhibit the conversion of androstenedione and testosterone into estrogen in a study by the University of Utah School of medicine. Also unlike novadex or clomid nicotine is a true anti estrogen and not just an estrogen blocker. By this I mean that nicotine actually speeds up the degradation of blood estrogen levels. So nicotine causes a reduction in estrogen production and also decreases existing estrogen levels.

    Regulation of hormone levels

When Nicotine is used on a daily basis it stabilizes the Adrenal hormones by acting on the Hypothalamus, which affects the pituitaries release of regulating hormones and increases GH release. This keeps various hormone levels stable during times of depression, or stress. That is why a smoker can have a cigarette in the morning to wake up and one at night to help relax.

When you stop using nicotine your whole endocrine system gets f_cked up. Your cortisone, and adrenaline levels take a nose dive until your natural hormone regulation takes control again. Fortunately nicotine does not seem to have a negative effect on GH release upon cessation.

Getting your natural hormone levels back in order takes about two weeks. As body builders we can use this to our advantage. When you stop a cycle you can start using nicotine. This will quickly reduce the high cortisone levels to a normal level. After coming off nicotine you can start a new cycle and take advantage of the low cortisone levels for the first two weeks

    Nicotine as a smart drug
Nicotine is a cholinergic agonist and mimics the effects of acetylcholine. It also has been shown to increase levels of neurotransmitters dopamine, nor-epinephrine, and serotonin. Dopaminergic neurons are linked to reward pathways and pleasure while serotonergic neurons are associated with anti-anxiety.
This effect may explain the addicting property of nicotine. But they also seem to have some nootropic benefits. Studies have shown that mice perform better on mentally strenuous tasks after being given Nicotine. Nicotine also causes a release of vassopresin. This hormone is the hormone that helps imprint thoughts into long-term memory.
    Help with PGF2a

In one study nicotine was able to reduce the side effects of the prostaglandin PGF2a. In isolated canine retinal arteries partially contracted with PGF2á nicotine was added and resulted in the relaxation of those arteries without affecting the other effects of PGF2a. So in theory nicotine can be added to a PGF2a cycle to decrease intestinal discomfort.

Nicotine also seems to cause a release of prostaglandins, which favors the good prostaglandins like PGF2a.

    Fat loss properties:

One study stated that Nicotine was possibly the most effective anti obesity drug available at the time that the study was performed (late 70’s). Nicotine has various properties that help in weight reduction while sparing muscle.

    Reduced appetite:
Nicotine inhibits food intake via three mechanisms, first it elevated Adrenalin and Nor-adrenalin levels which reduces appetite. Next Nicotine itself has been shown to reduce the craving for carbohydrates. Great addition to a ketogenic diet.

    Thermogenic effects:
The release of Adrenalin and Nor-adrenalin also cause a thermogenic effect similar to that of ECA.

    Actual fat reduction:
Nicotine stimulates a very rapid mobilization of fatty deposits. This happens as quickly as 10 minutes after administration. The lipids are mobilized and free fatty acids are released in the blood stream in great amounts. The free fatty acids diminish quickly due to an unknown action of nicotine. Nicotine seems to help the body use the FFA’s for energy in an accelerated fashion.

To recap Nicotine has an eight-fold weight loss effect on the system.

    1.Reduction of overall appetite
    2.Reduced craving for carbs
    3.Thermogenic effect
    4.Fatty deposit mobilization
    5.Stimulation of FFA degradation
    6.Estrogen reduction
    7.Prostaglandin release
    8.Growth hormone release
    Negative aspects of Nicotine:
I have talked about all the good things that nicotine does but what are the negative effects? Well I know everyone is thinking cancer right? Wrong, nicotine is not the cancer-causing agent in cigarettes. It is just the addictive chemical that makes you intake the 2000 or so carcinogens in tobacco. I am not talking about smoking here; use the gum or the patches. Nicotine does have some negative effects though:
    Negative effects of Nicotine:
    1.Decreased Vit. C
    2.Decreased Vit. E
    3.Increased VLDL
    4.Decreased HDL
    5.Addictive properties
6.And all the typical sides of stimulants
So to counteract these just make sure you take extra vitamin C and E and watch your saturated fat intake. As for the addictive properties well that’s up to you.

oh i'm not saying that other drugs are "less worse", and some definately have much harder withdrawl ordeals, but because you can't go into the local 7-11 and buy *edit* or use it openly at the bar, they're easier to stay away from in the long run. but aside from that, nicotine haunts the user for a very long time after ceasation. i'll find the graph. you'll understand better after that. i'm not saying it's the worst drug in the world, just the hardest to stay off of long term.

if you can drop it down from over a pack to just a couple a day that alone would make a huge positive change. Just take baby steps if need be, but just tell yoursel its just a fvcking ciggarette.

  23. #23
you'll also sleep more and better. they did research that shows that people who quit smoking sleep on avg. 1-2 hours longer and spend more time in rem.

well it could break the habit of always having a cigarette in you hand. I think a lot of it's addiction is just out of habit. Not saying Nicotine isn't addictive but I know some of the times I used to crave a cig was out of habit like right after eating, when I was drinking or standing around talking to people. That's why the patch never worked for me, I just had to white-knucle it and quit cold turkey...one of the hardest things I've had to do but that was years ago and don't have a desire to start back

i smoked a pack to a pack and a half everyday. i used the patch and it was pretty easy quitting. whats weird is that i quit smoking 1 wk after starting to bounce at a bar. i did gain 10lbs in 2 or 3 months. the good thing is that if you quit smoking your endurance will be way better so running is tons easier so you will loose it. and with the money i saved on ciggz i bought HGH.

yea.......weight gain after quiting is down to poor diet and over eating.
If your disciplined enough with your eating, you ca quit without gaining weight.

I used to smoke, and one day I told myself I was going to quit. So what did I do, I formulated a cutting diet. SUPER strict. Did cardio every morning for 60 minutes at a very moderate pace. Then at night when I got a craving I would go on a walk. Cut down to around 6% bf. you can quit smoking, as I haven't touched nicotine or cigarettes since April 3rd 06. It may be addicting but the power of the human condition can easily defeat this addiction. You can do it. Treat it like any other quest in your life. Set goals, and stick by them. It IS possible.

I quit a few days before I started my first cycle. Juicing was a big motivator for quitting and has helped me stay quit for the past 8 mos. That kind of makes it hard to tell about weight gain, but I finished my cycle 3 or 4 mos ago and have definitly gained some fat but probably unrelated to smoking - I think my bulking diet carried over too much

i dint gain any fat after i stopped smoking. Quiting is easy if you want to do it. Smoking is so disgusting i dont know how i ever did it. Cigs should be illegal.
I think some people gain because instead of smoking they eat. I did eat, but healthy. And i drank lots of ice water, which relly helps control the cravings. It waas the best stop smoking advice i recieved.

Try using welbutren or zyban. They have a nice side of appetite supression, as well as a great ability to assist in dumping your habbit. You may get the best of both worlds out of the deal.
