good and bad ways to bring up gear?

I want to start by saying that in no way am I asking for a source or a source check. I'm pretty sure I understand all the rules of this board and this may be in the grey area. But, here it goes.

So I just to moved and would like to find someone that can hook a brotha up. I've never cycled before so I have no idea how to approach someone on the subject in a respectful, discrete manner. Does anyone have suggestions/do's and don't's on how to ask someone that you suspect does cycle and can get their hands on it. I know everyone is different, but any info may help. I just want to get some gear w/o pissing everyone at my gym off, at least not the ones that can get it for me. Thanks.

I've been at my new gym for about 2 months and have got to know a bunch of people, at least on an acquaintance level. At this point they all know me as the cheer coaching going to school for his RN, not a cop. (I know it just crossed your mind, but no I'm not gay ) But, all the same you're right. BTW, What just happened?

This has worked for me, all the guys i've talked to eventually just admit they've cycled before and ask if i have as well.

when it comes to gear, some (or should I say most) guys are so secretive that they can smell your ulterior motive even id you try to get chatty. I would go for a more patient approach: workout at their gym for a month, making small talk on how to work this lagging muscle or that....throw in a couple of sincere complements for some ego-booster and make sure they see your work you ass off like you want it bad! Then eventually, you can say things like, "I dont know how you do it but I've been working my ass off am I feel no progress." Trust me, you'll soon hear a "psst, wanna know a secret?"

Trust me, thats how I made friends with a pro bber and got a referral for his source.
