Experts Sound Off on Workout Grunting

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20071024...orkoutgrunting

    By E.J. Mundell
HealthDay Reporter Wed Oct 24, 7:00 PM ET
WEDNESDAY, Oct. 24 (HealthDay News) -- Jane Ross, a 42-year-old Boston area gym buff, is honest about it: When exercising, she sometimes grunts.

"I think it's part of going to a gym -- I grunt during a workout, and I think that most people do," said the mom and former personal trainer. "When you are exerting yourself, it's a release."

But not everyone is so accepting of those loud fitness club exhalations.

Late last year, Albert Argibay, a Wappinger Falls, N.Y., bodybuilder and state correction officer, was escorted by police out of the Planet Fitness gym he was a member of, after another member complained to management of his loud grunting during weightlifting.

Planet Fitness, a national chain, has a solid "no-grunting" policy in place and Argibay's noisemaking -- along with a resulting verbal tussle with management -- cost him his membership, The New York Times reported.

The story spawned headlines and much debate, with the grunt-prone lined up on one side and annoyed non-grunters on the other. The former say grunting boosts their workouts, while the latter claim it's just so much hot air.

    Each side has its advocates.

Dennis O'Connell is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and professor and chairman of physical therapy at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. He has led two studies assessing grunting's ability to maximize exercise output.

During the research, O'Connell had a variety of people lift a heavy dead weight and pull that weight upward until they straightened their bodies into an upright position. Participants were told to either grunt or stay quiet during the lift.

"Very experienced lifters that normally grunted when they lifted did have about a 1 percent improvement with grunting," O'Connell said.

That pattern was repeated with the other lifters who grunted, he added. "A group of college football players -- they, of course, also lifted weights fairly regularly -- showed a 2 percent improvement. And the untrained group -- graduate students in physical therapy -- had about a 5 percent increase," he said.

When these improvements were spread across the total group, they did not reach statistical significance, O'Connell noted, so there's no firm conclusion that grunting will always boost a gym-goer's performance.

"But, for some people, there was actually a small percentage increase when they grunted, in terms of the force produced," O'Connell said. For that reason, "I wouldn't be trying to tell people not to grunt," he said.

Just how these loud vocalizations might improve force output remains unclear. O'Connell said studies done elsewhere have suggested one theory -- that grunting quiets inhibitory nerves cells in the spinal cord. Those cells would normally impede the ability of muscles to contract and generate force, he said.

But other experts aren't sure any of that holds water.

"As far as anything going on physiologically [with grunting], I'm not aware of any data or studies that have revealed that," said Larry Birnbaum, an exercise physiologist based in Duluth, Minn.

"The only thing I can think of is that it's a psychological thing," he said. "But psychology is very important in sports in general -- if you think you can, it raises the possibility that you can."

Belisa Vranich, a sports psychologist for Gold's Gym Fitness in New York City, believes that for the average workout fan, grunting is probably unnecessary.

"Some people grunt to give others the impression that [the grunters] are doing a lot of work. It's just like flexing and strutting, trying to attract attention," she told the Orange County Register."
The other reason is a more physical one -- they're not breathing properly. In order to grunt, they have to hold their breath and exhale forcefully."

O'Connell said there might be a means of ending fitness-club feuds linked to grunting.

"I think that [gym goers] might look at deep breathing in and out without necessarily the vocalization," he said. Instead of that loud burst of sound, "they may try and practice giving a little less 'auditory stimulation' for the rest of us," O'Connell advised.

But Ross believes people should lighten up and accept the occasional grunt as part of the gym experience.

"I'm kind of in my own world when I'm at the gym, and I think most people are like that," she said. "So, between songs or if your iPod breaks, you're sometimes aware that people are grunting. And that's just the deal."

I'm more of a growler than a grunter. Specially on heavy deads and squats.

I can see where an idiot could be screaming like a banshee on every rep but the grunt on the last couple reps should be expected for people who lift seriously.

    Who does this?

I bet if she saw me posing in the mirror during my workouts she'd think I'm doing it for attention. Not because for someone who competes, it's a part of shaping the muscle.

i think that the only grunting that is necessary is the involuntary sounds one may make on the last couple of reps on a heavy set. if you are doing sets of ten and grunting at every rep you are an attention whore jackass.

I went to Planet Fitness, it's called the "lunk" alert when someone droppes the weights, makes grunting sounds or "judges" ..this flashing light goes off and they kick you out. It made me feel uncomforable in there, I was afraid to breath too hard or i might get kicked out. I moved one of the benches back once and it made a noise, I looked up and a couple staff were looking at me like "do it again and your gone..."

They should not have free weights in a place like that.

And they barely do really, They have more treadmills and bikes than anything but they had a couple flat bench and a dumb-bell rack that only went up to 80 i think...a couple smith maches and one leg machine

it is really just a health club

I have no idea but that's one of the things they have listed that will get you kicked out:

    Dropping Weights
    Grunting
    "Judging"

I guess if you tell you buddy "hey look at that fatty" would be considered judging

I like seeing people go over to the Smith machine and "squat" with 315, when they're only moving down about 4 inches and yelling at every rep. Man they're so fukkin hardcore.

i'd like to see one of these pukes do 135lb skull crusher's without making some kind of noise on the last 2 or 3 reps at least!

people who work out without every making a sound are the same people who put thier eyes in the corner when you look at them.

    fvck em

They kept mentioning "so, we don't really cater to bodybuilders..."

Not that I'm a big guy at all, and i was wearing a fairly baggy jacket, but it was just odd they Kept saying that. I just said "that's fine" after each time they said it

Grunting/groaning towards the end of a heavy set is so normal, half the time I'm not even aware I'm doing it... To forbid it as policy is just plain insane. Hell, I love gyms with clanking metal plates and people grunting... atleast you know the place is ALIVE!! If a member wants that much quietness, they should go workout at the library

If i'm paying for my membership, I'll grunt whenever I feel like it. I'm not doing it on every rep and I'm not yelling.

If it annoys someone, buy an iPod or wear earplugs. I could give two shits.

i grunt if i feel the need. more importantly, i hate being judged for flexing. it is a great way to keep pumped in between sets. a few good long flexes keep me warm and have been a part of my workout for a long time. not my fault my gym is surrounded by mirrors.

same here, i always pose for the mirrors, might as well practice in between sets.

    Exactly true.

I was asked by a fitness manager at a commercial gym i used to train at, why i needed to look in the mirror and flex my muscles or go through a routine in the mirror with friends...SHE (lol, little fat woman who you can tell doesnt even train) said that it is to attract attention...so i abruptly corrected her mistake and told her that i was practising my bodybuilding routine in the mirrors, surely the gym (being the place used for bodysculpture) is the place to practice bodybuilding routines...esspecially if there are men and women who are doing breakdancing in the gym (since when was a gym about break dancing, yet bodybuilders arent allowed to use the mirrors to flex in?)

After she agreed it was part of bodybuilding, she said that i would have to go to the mens toilets to pose in the mirrors there. Needless to say that this commercial gym lost me as a customer.

Haha also, in the same gym i forgot to mention, before i left i grunted for all 6 reps on my heavy set of squats with 580 lbs. Quite funny to see everyone look over...then when they saw the weights being lifted, thats when they knew they were OWNED!!!

Needless to say i dont train at commercial gyms anymore, no atmosphere and no chance of improvements.

Had an argument in there about sharing th eleg extension machine, a politely asked him as he was in his rest period if i could jump on and we do a set whilst the other is resting (as most people do in gyms), he told me 'no' (haha the little fat old man told the 230 lbs ripped bodybuilder 'no' you will wait) and then the fuker just sits on the machine resting for 2 minutes doing nothing before doing another pathetic little swinging set of sh*t on the leg extension again. I had a go at this guy, i told him that normally in hardcore gyms we share equipment and work in with each other, hence if you needed a spot then id help you, the same goes with equipment...so he replied 'well we arent in a hardcore gym' and speedily walked off as i was telling him off...this idiot made me fuming with anger.

It was almost like he wanted to deliberately argue or tell me 'no' because i looked the best in the gym, a 60 year old chubby man who i later saw walking from the changing rooms in his suit ready for work...fukin p*ssy!

You just cant train with these people, they have no balls, they have no heart, they go to the gym and float about whilst going through the motions, theres no way anyone serious can train in the same place as people like this because they totally ruin any atmosphere. Its the same when you see a little fat granny balancing on the swiss ball with her 'personal trainer', the only time she comes to the gym EVER is when she has a cold, but still she MUST go to the gym that day...meanwhile you are heavy deadlifting with 300kg and breathing in all the air around you, air that she has sneezed into and as a result you get ill.

Its impossible to train in the same environemnt as these people.

to each his own.... there are power lifters that go to my gym and regularly get themselves psyched by pacing around, letting out a huge grunt before they even touch any weight and then dead lift 1080 lbs. others do the same without making a noise. i see people get intimidated or bothered by those who grunt loudy and will clear out to the other side of they gym. i grunt when i need to.. never yell .. but for those that do if its their thing then thats their thing.
