.......Are HUMMER's good vehicles?
Hi,
Im in the market to buy a used vehicle.
I was all set on getting a used Escalade or EXT
but then come to find out the Cadillac's suck!
** I heard this from a few sources and my heart
was broke. They said the only good Caddie's are
the DTS **
Now, I'm looking into an H2.
What do you guy's think of these? Do they last
long like a Honda, BMW, Toyota, etc?
Please give me your input.
THANKS!
BB

how much you plan on spending?
I never have been a fan of Hummers. I guess if you go off roading and/or live on a rugged terrain, but being a city boy, hummers dont suit me. Plus, they are a killer on gas. JMO though.

Well dude they're really shit on gas. and you'll pay an arm and a leg for parts.
IMO. I would check the comsumers guide, and i think CAA or AAA has they,re own vehicle reports. Also check carfax.com, you can look up recall bulletens on each make of vehicles. Hope this helps u bro

They are just chevy tahoe's with a different body (based on same chassis). They burn way too much gas for no reason.
My opinion is, Big gas-guzzling vehicles that really have no other purpose other than "Hey, I drive a big expensive piece of garbage so I have a big dick" trucks shouldn't be on the road. I see people drive F350's that do nothing other than drive from thier house to thier office job and back....no reason to have a gas guzzling truck like that
I could go on with this rant, but i need to eat breakfast....

Whoever told you that Caddies suck and Hummers are better isn't very well educated on automobiles...they're made by the same company! Both Hummer and Cadillac make quality vehicles but will likely not last as long as the other companies you mentioned. Then again, it all depends on how you drive, maintenance, and over all conditions on which you drive.

as was mentioned before, the hummer with the true off road abilities is the H1...other than that your just buying a truck with the same chasis and off road ability as the tahoe or escalade(i might be wrong with the escalade)...not worth the price tag IMO

Yes, that was the only version that shared much of it's drive train, braking systems and suspension with the acual military hummers. The new ones were more "civillianized" for better paved road comfort.
It really is just a waste. They are too big/bulky and "nice" to be taking off road now. If you have any doubts about it's lack of off-road ability, check this video out...this is something an older Wrangler or even an old Ford Bronco could easily trek....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSMTRxIknpw
Edit: or this one...it's my point exactly...It shows an older hummer gettin hung up on a tiny crest wihle you see Jeeps and the old Bronco I's just trek right by it...funny

an h2 & escalade are so similar its scary.built on the same platform with different sheetmetal & luxry crap..... the drivetrain is virtually the same-- so I doubt one is more reliable than the other...your information is wrong there.. get ready to pony up some nice cash for fuel.

i owned 2 H2's and loved them until the price of gas went up. The last time I filled up I think I paid close to $85.00 to fill the tank. I think I got about 12 miles to the gallon.

Really confused as to why you let one persons opinion shape your decision. Is this person a mechanic, do they work in the car industry, or better yet HAVE THEY EVER OWNED THE VEHICLES YOU WERE INQUIRING ABOUT?? If they haven't, then it sounds like its just someone who likes to hear themselves talk and innundate the world with their shitty opinions.
The Escalade is one of the best selling SUV's in the American market, do you really believe people would spend $60,000 on an SUV that was completely unreliable and a piece of shit?? How many Escalades do you see driving around vs. how many Toyota Land Cruisers you see around. Cadillac has really stepped up its game YEAR AFTER YEAR, and I can say that from experience since we've owned various ones for the last 5-6 years. I've driven the Escalade EXT, as well as the new 07-08 Escalade, and both are amazing vehicles. Cadillac offers great warranty's.....
It really all comes down to personal preference, you need to test drive vehicles to decide which one you like. You also have to weigh things against one another. Yes, if you buy a foriegn car the chances are it will be much more reliable, and break less, however you're looking at spending more money initially for the vehicle. If you're going domestic, you're going to most likely spend less money initially and more money later in repair costs. To be honest, I've been burned quite a few times by buying vehicles without warranty's, cars are not perfect, foreign/domestic they will all BREAK EVENTUALLY. So the bottomline is that with whatever vehicle you buy, spend an extra $1-3,000 and buy a certified pre-owned with a nice extended warranty.
As far as preference, I would much rather pull up to places and be seen in an Escalade versus a Nissan Armada.....but thats just me...

H3s are all right, but thats about it. They are a little under powered if you plan to tow anything. They have the gm 6.0l engine, and although they look big from the out side they dont have much more passenger room, and just the same cargo as most other full sized suv's. They also rate really low on the crash tests. Escalade are decent, same engine as the hummer, but thats about all that I know about them. Both cars are pretty much just all around average, what you really paying for is social status.

i had an '03 h2. bought it new. was very happy with its look and thought it was pretty tough. 'till i went offroading and ripped the front left wheel off. not the tire, the entire wheel. and i was not pushing it at all. but that was just my experience . they might have improved now.

But the warranty covered that I take it? Even though you had it offroad, or did they not know about that?
these truck might break easily but they tend to have fairly good drive train warranties and parts are easily accessable so it makes them easier (maybe still expensive, but easier) to fix. I just feel bad for someone that does something like that to a used hummer with the warranty run out...shellin some cash

I was gonna say that the H2 had a bad ride on Top Gear (BBC UK)
So to did the Escalade.
In all honesty, if you want a decent vehicle that is the tits off road go for a Range Rover.
I would'nt personally choose teh sport version as im from teh country and dont see the sue in a half off roader half car,
the Range Rover Vogue is probably the best there is.
Go for the 4.4L version,
2002- 2005 had a BMW M62 V8.
i2006- its has a 4.2L Supercharged V8 from Jaguar. or the normally aspirated 4.4 form jag

wooooow, sorry to hear that man...maybe I was wrong about the warranty thing...
Why was it not covered? Did they know you went off roading? I suppose you don't really have to tell them what exactly happened when you ripped your whole front wheel off...I guess you can say you hit a really deep pothole?? maybe?? lol

Tell them you swearved to miss a dear, my buddy did the same thing as you in his grand cherokee. He made up a story about swerving to miss a dear, and the insurance paid.

Never tell an insurance man what happend. Always lie.
I wrote my mates car off a few years back, put the A pillar level with the sill of the window with a fence post knocker.
he told the insurance man that he was driving up to his fathers farm and a sheep jumped out in front of him and he swearved to avoid it an turned it on its roof in a ditch.
Insurance guy went to the road to check it out and said ok thats fine i shouldnt imagine you will have any problems with them paying out.

The H2 is a symbol plain and simple, and they are underpowered..
If i were to buy one, i'd get one with a blown engine, and put a diesel in it, at least that way i could bump the torch and power..The answer to your every question

propane injected, and turbo the diesel, that would indeed be the ticket..

I think it was a show called Trucks..maybe...but anyway, they built a Dodge turbo diesel up with Nitrous/Propane injectors. It produced around 1200hp and the torque was off the charts at about 3 1/2k rpm

I will never own another non-diesel truck.. once you've had one, the power and utility is completely addicting!!!
as for the H1-H2 thing.. the H2 is actually a much better designed vehicle.. to the point they even considered the vehicle's FLIGHT charictersitics while airborne... I work for a company that used to be onwed by GM and know 2 designers who helped develop the H2.. when used properly, it can be a very capable machine.. but for me.. it's H1 diesel ALL THE WAY!!!!, no H2 for me.

Uhhh. it has the same chassis as the Tahoe...great "new" design....
Poor platform to have an off-road vehicle like that based on...really though, an old 1988 toyota 4x4 has a better frame and suspension then the Tahoe (for going off-road)
Refer to my posts...#4 and #8
Edit...are you referring to the military MKII and MKIII hummers? Because those have been improved on greatly with stiffer suspension, chasis and stronger diesel to handle the extra 1000lb of armour. I would have to agree with that just not the civillian onesLast edited by Dizz28; 11-05-2007 at 10:01 AM.
