What is the measurement of weight called a "stone?"
I see the British use a measurement of weight called a "stone" all the time. Can someone tell me what this means? Is a stone equal to a certain amount of pounds?

Okay, thanks....being a Yankee I had never heard of this "stone" thing until I happened upon some BBC stories and other UK web sites.

Yeah its an old Imperial system that is still used in the UK and Eire. 8 stone is equal to a hundred weight.
It came from medieval times for use with measuring the weight of commodities, farm produce etc.
If some one is say 13 stone 5. it means he/she is 13 stone 5 pounds. The plural for stone is "stone" and not stones as some eejits say.

1 hogshead = 238.480943 liters
A rod is a unit of length, equal to 11 cubits, 5.0292 metres or 16.5 feet
So, that translates into 504 U.S. gallons per mile, or about 1.2 litres per metrer In units more normal for this purpose, it is 0.00198 miles per US gallon (or about 10.48 feet per gallon) or 118,500 L/100 km. I doubt that is how you like it.Last edited by Kratos; 11-16-2007 at 12:57 PM.
