tattoo ideas?
alright, i'm thinking about getting a half sleeve and chest piece that i want to do that pertains to a Nietzsche about "he who battles monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster." i was thinking about some kind of horror piece, but i'm kind of blanking on ideas. perhaps a dr. jekyll and mr hyde type image? any ideas?

Can't go wrong with Giger-like work... There is tons of stuff out there similar to this...alot of it in airbrushing on cars, and just airbrushed painting...do some searches...freaky stuff.

Tattoo ideas?
The first time I saw barbed wire tattooed around a guy's bicep, I thought it looked good. Now, so many people have 'em, that it looks dumb.
Instead, I've been thinking about having a face put on my hand (the side of my thumb and index finger) so when I wiggle my thumb up and down, it looks like the face is talking. A small wig over the knuckles would complete the illusion.
Something like this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=B-FOXXwQ5OE

If it were me, I would go to ALL the local shops within the distance you are willing to travel. Check out all the artists work, once you find one or two you are really into talk to them about your idea. Make sure to go to ALL the shops though! Make sure the artist digs your idea and can do the level of work you expect. Please do not let money be an issue, or time. It is going to be on your body for the rest of your life! don't worry if one guy charges 100-200 an hour, Chances are they will move some when they get into the piece. Even from there though, to me, SO WHAT if it cost you 2g's instead of 1. You know you got exactly the piece you wanted.
I would also refrain from having a friend draw a detailed design or image. A rough sketch or basic idea is totally fine but if you truly find a good artist he will blow any of your friends art out of the water, for the most part(unless your friend is an professional artist too). Remember they are artists, if you have ever known any artists they are WAY more into their own style or something they can put their spin on things than they are "cookie cutter" things so to speak. Tattoo artists draw, sketch and tattoo for hours a day, they are very very good at it and fast.
If you are lucky there is a tattoo convention going on in the near future, it may help meet artists and see a lot of work without a lot of travel. You are in SoCal so the chances of that are good.
Myspace is a good place to check too.
