a question i always ask..to the americans
Im looking at moving to the states, perm
but i don't know where is good to live for a first timer, as in money wise, location, ameneties etc
i'm not too sure wheres affordable, obviously NYC isn;t:P but i don't know the US, i want to train at golds..so that has to be possible:P
also...anyone know much about getting a perm visa? I hear unless i have a guaranteed job or family/us wife I can't have perm residence?
And i have no family there/wife and no job, my job is here, which i would leave to go to the USA
Thanks guys

I am partial to North Carolina. I love Florida and would like to live there myself but would not recommend it, Texas is great also. Just come over and visit and nock up some chick. Or go to Mexico come up through the southern border where a sombrero and you will be here forever.

Hmm, for a question like that theres other resources that would be much more valuable to you. Some of the cheapest places in US are also hardest to find work in.
But I know some places in Ohio are pretty cheap and easy to get established in. Also a state as a whole can't really be economically generalized because individual regions in that state can have vast differences in property value or w/e.
One thing I can say however is theres wayyy more places besides golds and even though we have a lot of golds in jersey I much rather prefer WOW.

And I think Nevada is pretty cheap too.

Philadelphia...there are very affordable one bedroom apartments in Rittenhouse Square, the most upscale section of the city... And the city is packed with opportunities...There are also surrounding suburbs between 5-20 minutes outside of the city which are nice if you are looking for a home, and the taxes are not too bad. I would recommend the south New Jersey area, however the property taxes are obscene, I still love it here however. I'd suggest that you pick an area very similar to where you live now, that way it is not too hard to get adjusted. If you live in the city, go for the city, if you live in the suburbs, go for the suburbs. I would avoid the country at all costs though, they are much less friendly areas to foreigners.

Also...avoid picking a place because its "cheap." You get what you pay for. Often times the more expensive areas are that way for a reason, they are often lower crime areas, and better places to live in general with nicer stores in the area. There are also probably a lot of very good jobs in close proximity or within reasonable driving distance. You dont want to pick some place because its "cheap" and end up in a high crime low income area which would be very dangerous and unpleasent in general. Also, I hear that New Hampshire is a very nice state to live in with A LOT of tech jobs. If you goto www.Monster.com, you can post your resume with them and they are basically head hunters who will find you and offer you a position based on your skills, experience, education, etc. My personal opinion, and I guess this all depends on what lifestyle you are accustomed to, but for a single person to live comfortably in the United States, I cannot see accepting a job for anything under $80,000 USD/year with benefits (health ins, 401k, etc)

if you have a comp science degree, you should maybe look at the suburbs around Chicago (Illinois). Lotsa low-medium to upper class areas can be found, plenty of job oppurtunities. If you work in chicago, you could take the train to commute, but dont actually live in chicago, its very expensive. If you are into bigs yard and privacy, there are some suburbs that will offer you that, and if you are into nice houses with no yard in those designer neighborhoods that are very safe and whatnot, plenty of that too. But there are many computer based businesses there. The weather isnt too bad, winters can be nasty but nothing like the north east coast. Summers can be pretty hot. Just your basic continental weather, your probly used to some meritime type stuff being from the uk

if you're willing to move to canada it's an idea. booming economy as compared to the sluggish US right now. Lots of people in my area that recently moved here from the UK and they're not highly educated or anything so it can't be that hard to get a Visa or whatever it is you need to stay here.
