    Yawning

    So why is yawning contagious?

Ya know, one person yawns, then another, etc...

    Has it been explained yet?

    Weird...

This is going to get deep

Back in Neanderthal Man time, with no written or spoken language, the leader of the tribe would yawn to signify to his clan it was time to sleep. Each additional member would then yawn to pass the message along. Over an extended period of time it became an involuntary reaction...IMO

I have a theory that there is only about 150 yawns in total throughout the entire world. Those 150 yawns travel unseen throughout the world going from one person to the next. Somehow direct eye contact allows for the yawn to travel quicker to that person. Does any of this make any sense??????

i think it is a reflex action like sneezing or snoring during a sleep time. but i have seen some folks yawning deliberately to lie their state of mood if u will.
not sure always what their intentions are because individuals vary.

    Yawn

For other uses, see Yawn (disambiguation).

Joseph Ducreux yawning; self-portrait ca 1783

A yawn (from the Middle English yanen, an alteration of yonen or yenen, which in turn comes from the Old English geonian.[1]) is a reflex of deep inhalation and exhalation of breath. Pandiculation is the term for the act of stretching and yawning simultaneously.[2]
Yawning is associated with tiredness, stress, overwork, lack of stimulation, or boredom. Yawning can also be a powerful non-verbal message with several possible meanings, depending on the circumstances[citation needed].
The exact causes of yawning are still undetermined. The claim that yawning is caused by lack of oxygen has not been substantiated scientifically.[3] Some claim that yawning is not caused by lack of oxygen, for the reason that yawning allegedly reduces oxygen intake compared to normal respiration. [3] Another speculated reason for yawning is nervousness and is also claimed to help increase the state of alertness of a person - paratroopers were noted yawning right before their first jump.[1]

    [edit] Hypothesized causes of yawning

    1. When you have had a long day at work and all you want to do is relax but the miss's talks and talks and talks.
    2. When your having a beer in a bar and some guy who you don't really like but your always polite to comes towards you and starts telling you about 'his great weekend' and you need to get away in a hurry.
    3. A means of cooling the brain.[4]
    4. An action used as an unconscious communication of psychological decompression after a state of high alert.
    5. An excess of carbon dioxide and lack of oxygen in the blood. [2]
    6. When your on a date with a chick who's a little bit boring and not very up front.. and you need to hint its time to check out the bedroom.
    7. Tiredness.
    8. A means of equalizing middle ear pressure, which can be triggered by another's yawning.
    9. When watching any film staring Ben Affleck.
