Anyone had dental crowns put in?

What exactly do they do/are they used for?

And what were the costs? Did insurance cover it at all?

I've never had them since I've never had a cavity or dental problems before.

But...they're used to cover over and support teeth that are weak usually from decay or just a cosmetic reason. Please get white caps, not gold!

I have 3 crowns in the front. I chipped some teeth pretty bad when I was younger and they used some kind of filling to build them back up, but every few years the filling would come out so I got crowns the beginning of this year. They are much more durable than what I had before. What they do is cement the crown to your tooth. I got 3 of them and I think it cost 2500, my insurance paid 1000

the older material used for filling cavities expand and contract, and thus loosen..

if they come out, or a cavity forms underneath the whole thing gets cut away, and a nub is left, the "crown" is put in place permanently (however i just lost one after 7 yrs) they just glued it back on..

Cost was $1200, dental ins paid 50%..

i have a crown. they're basically a 'cap' for your tooth that happen to take the shape of your tooth. i had one put in on a molar that i had previously had a root canal on - apparently teeth with root canals and fillings on top get brittle after a while, and they replace with a crown.

my dentist has a pretty cool system - they take a 3-D picture of your tooth, then grind it down to a peg, take a 3-D pic of the peg, then put a piece of ceramic in their blasting machine which then designs an exact 3-D replica of your tooth with an insert like the peg and they just glue and snap it on. cost $800, my insurance covered half.

Most insurance companies cover around half of what it costs total for crowns. Crowns usually start with a root canal, where they tool out the cavity by blasting away parts of your tooth. Then they cover it with a ceramic tooth that is moulded to fit over the chipped away tooth. If you get crowns and they need adjustment they will usually do it for free.
