iPhone 3G - July 11th!
Apple today unveiled its highly anticipated iPhone 3G. The device "climbs the next mountain" of requiring fast mobile data as well as reducing the price. The connection is the most important feature and downloads websites 2.8 times faster than an iPhone on EDGE; it's also faster versus rival 3G-capable devices like the Nokia N95, according to Apple. E-mail also transfers more quickly and approaches Wi-Fi speeds, the company says.
Despite the higher-power Internet connection, the device can last for 5 hours of 3G talk time and 10 hours of 2G -- up from 8 hours on 2G. Browsing is the same at between 5-6 hours, while video and audio playback have been upgraded to 7 and 24 hours respectively.
GPS is also built into the device and can combine with cell tower triangulation and Wi-Fi to help locate an iPhone. The feature allows real-time positioning in Google Maps.
The device is even thinner at the edges and has a full plastic back for improve reception, but with solid metal buttons; the headphone jack is flush to allow any device. Audio quality is also improved, the company says.
iPhone 2.0 software is preloaded on the device and includes access to the App Store, parental controls, and native support for iWork and Office files. The iPhone 3G integrates directly with Apple's new Mobile Me service to share calendars, contacts, photos, and iDisk information in real-time between computers, iPhones, and iPod touch devices.
The device will be available in 70 countries and will sell for $199 for an 8GB model -- $200 less than the original. There will also be a 16GB model for $299. Versions will be available in black and white. The phone is available through the online Apple Store and will ship to 22 countries on July 11th, with more following afterwards.

I have the original iPhone and hope that the new update will alow me to do some of the new bells and whistles.
Carlos you seem to have the heads up on this a little better then everyone so do you think Apple/AT&T will do some sort of deal to trade in the original to upgrade to the new one?

An AT&T representative who claims that if existing iPhone owners buy an iPhone 3G, the new 2 year contract replaces the current contract rather than extending it.Muscle Asylum Project Athlete

There are a lot of new features. They're listed here:

ATT might but I doubt Apple will. Everyone I know sold theirs before this weekend because they knew it was coming. I plan to give my current one to my brother. If you sell it to someone who doesn't know about the new one for for $250-$300.Muscle Asylum Project Athlete

They can be easily unlocked, well atleast the current ones. Bought my mum an iphone when they came out. It's nice, my mum found it easier to use than her razor. Apple they are really good in marketing. I think stock;s in apple is worth for long term investing.

Carlos-do you think its worth getting ipod touch if I get this phone? As i need a new mp3 player.

I have a traditional iPod that I use for the gym. I only use my iPhone for music when I'm going out for the night during the commute. I think it's too risky to use an iPhone or Touch at the gym. Seems to delicate to me. For my needs I wouldn't use a Touch as a main player.

Im thinking of going with the 45 a month plan with O2 to get me the free 8Gb version....
What are the browsing speeds like when using the moblie internet connection?
I only tried in a shop when the first iPhone came out, but i think that was using a WiFi gateway.
