Man, as a guy who has had sleeping issues since the first day federal agents came knocking on my door in december of 2004, I don't think that you can ever get too much sleep.
The only negative effects it could have is if you're sleeping like 10 to 11 hours straight you may be going catabolic because I've read somewhere that sleeping is "basically starving yourself for 8 hours."
The only other negative thing I can think is if you're getting to much sleep you may be sluggish throughout the day and not be able to work out as hard or skip them all together.
Other than that, no way man, you can never have enough sleep. I would seriously sleep 10 - 12 hours a day if I could do it.Last edited by nhl1; 08-13-2008 at 10:57 PM.

I read studies and i believe that there is no such thing as oversleeping. People say you over sleep when you sleep or say 10 hrs and its really hard for you to wake up and function but i feel that the more you sleep the longer its going to take your body to wake up.

I notice if I sleep long, it takes me like 4 hours to really feel awake.
Then once I am awake, it takes that much longer to feel tired, so it throws off my sleep cycle.
8 hours and its usually about 1/2 hour before I feel awake, and when time comes to go to sleep at night I don't feel like I can still go run a marathon.
The thing people don't understand is not all of our bodies are calibrated perfectly to a 24hour sleep/wake cycle.
Some bodies want to sleep 12 hours and be awake 20.
Some bodies want to sleep 6 hours and be awake 16.
Some want to sleep 8 and be awake 16 (avg).
I'm the type that wants to sleep 12 and be awake for 20, so its either have a hard time waking up or have a hard time going to sleep.
And I pick a hard time waking up, because at least that way I can conform to a 24 hour day.
If I sleep as long as my body wants, I'll won't be able to fall asleep till like 4am.

.50 mg xanax before bed
.50 mg at 630 am when i wake up to piss
Usually gets me a nice 8 to 9 hours. I am seriously Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when it comes to getting enough sleep.
And it sucks because the difference is VAST if I'm even just a half an hour short.
8 to 324,097,234 hours or more- everybodys best friend, lets work, then party, iq around 150, gettin shit done
7 to 7 1/2 hours - pissy, will be tired all day, a little paranoid, lets just get the day over with, iq around 120
less than 7 hours - "why did they let this guy out of the mental institution?"

it's a CATHETER
and most of the big body builders have commented on lots of sleep. arnold slept 13 hours a day. The thing is, he didn't sleep 13 hours straight. When i was in full power lift i would sleep 3 hours at a time and wake to eat then get a solid 6-8 hours straight through at night. I grew fast and felt great. I honestly don't think i could sleep 13 hours straight.
and watch out for medications that are sleep aids. They alter the state of mind when you are sleeping and don't allow the body to fully rest. Alcohol does the same thing. you never go into a full rested sleep when under the influence of alcohol.

Yah when I was up to 242 I would never sleep more than 5 hours and I'd take at least 1 nap a day. I never want to be that big again though, being a body builder isn't fun. Give me my lean, ripped, athletic 215-220 and I'm more than happy.
And I only take xanax cause I have too, but it doesnt affect your gains I assure you.

Disagree.
Our bodies aren't calibrated by the clock of 24 hrs (which man created). They are calibrated by the individual. Some need more some need less depending upon the person. On the weekends i could sleep Friday from 12:00am -1:30pm then fall asleep that night at 10:00pm without any issues.

One thing to keep in mind: if you oversleep, you have a chance to 1) under-eat [due to less awaken hours] or 2) if you still do eat your set cals, then you have to eat more frequently and each meal must have more cals, which might not be a good thing while cutting.
I like me some good heavy sleep though.

i find 8-9 hours is optimal for me. i thought the body's clock was ideally set by the sunrise/sunset... although where i live that means i'd get about 12 hours in the winter and 6 in the summer.

In general i funcation best on 6 hours of sleep. If I sleep 8+ which I can do, I will have a harder time waking up.

I've gone thru periods when i have not got out of bed at all and gone to the next morning. I really thought i could sleep my life away.
Nowadays i want to sleep forever, but i just drag my sorry ass to the cold shower.. need money..
I tell ya, if there's an afterlife there'd better be a duvet there!

I'll never grow cause every time I have a girl over I can't sleep. I never know if my ex or another girl is going to come storming in the door.
It's why I fear girls.
