lol... glad you like it! What are you planning to use it for? Server environment? For fun? Linux is pretty good and stable.. there are good distros out there, especially ubuntu. However, I don't agree w/ you on M$ dying anytime soon... just my thoughts on the subject.

I hear you... I use the Slackware distro v3! Powerful security and intrusion distro built, if I'm not mistaken, on ubuntu core or fedora. I use it at work, as well as for my freelance security job... it's just crazy!

In any case, I like the ubuntu distro; period. And I agree with you on the Dell deal to use Open Source (OS) binaries. It's the way to go. In my freshman year, I did some builds in C, C++ for linux platforms... I learned a lot about hardware architecture and the amazing power one has over the EM equipment lol! You feel like the anti-christ some times -god forbids- lol!

Enjoy it bro, let me know if you need any help.

I have been in IT for 12 years now and many people at some point said that Linux was going to take over and bla bla this bla bla that, but it never did.

In 2005 they came up with open office and star office which where suppose to rival Microsoft office at an abordable price, well we tested both software only to find out they where filled with bugs crashing all the time, and not doing half of what Microsoft office could do.

I have been around a lot and to be honest i have not seen much Linux anywhere, most places where replacing there linux service with microsoft 2000 or 2003.

Linux is complicated, you need to unzip package, log in has root or you cannot install anything and some updates are corrupted you need to reinstall your server from scratch.

Linux is a good platform but it will fad one day or the other and will always remain underground.

Linux/UNIX does dominate the server world these days. For desktops MS windows is still what people want, linux wasnt really designed much for desktop use originally. Most people just use their home computers for email and porn and so windows is fine for them.

As a computer technician running my own business for almost 10 years now this is my take on Linux: I personally like Linux. I have used many different distros over many years Including slackware, Mandrake, Redhat, Fedora, Puppy, Knoppix and more versions of Ubuntu than I can shake a stick at. Linux has a lot going for it. Its highly customizable, Its super secure, and its free. If you know what you are dong in terminal there is nothing you can’t do with Linux.

Now for its short comings: Most main stream programs do not work with it. I know there is open office to replace Office and Gimp to replace photo shop, but when its all said and done they are not the same and are not industry standard period. The list of main stream programs that wont work with Linux are to long to list. Also, you may be a wiz at Gimp but try to get a job in graphic design and tell the boss that you really never been in photo shop, see how long it takes him to kick you out. Until main stream programs are able to be used on Linux without such things as Wine, Linux wont be over taking Windows anytime soon.

Now, lets look at how you add/remove programs/apps in Windows, OS X, and Linux. In Windows you have the wizard. You double click an exe file and a nice little wizard guides you through installing the program, look out for toolbars and suck while doing this. To remove a program you go to add/remove and simply click remove, again the little wizard does its thing. It also leaves reg files all over your HDD. With Mac and OS X you install and app by dragging it to your apps folder. You remove it by dragging it to the trash. Done. With Linux sometimes you get lucky and the program you want to install can be installed with one click, other times you have to hunt down the correct version and then do 5 terminal hacks longer than this post to get the damn thing installed, and then sometimes it still wont work.

Another reason Linux will not be main stream with end users anytime soon is that there is just too many versions and disros out there. They need to consolidate into one to have any hope. Problem is most Linux users can’t seem to agree on what version is best.

IMO Linux is good for two types of end users: The grandma or small child that will never remove anything or install anything and just needs a very basic system for getting online and listening to music, and the true Linux geek who lives inside the terminal and does not mind having to tinker with it endlessly.

Microsoft web pages are run on apache server which are all Linux based, and has far has security goes Linux is ahead of Microsoft.

But has you say i installed hylafax on a debian server, that was my first encounter with linux, and it was really not easy.

Linux is fun but way to complicated for most people. I went to an interview yesterday and they have Microsoft Server 2003 and also have Linux servers, if i get the job hopefully i will then i will have to learn linux but i really dont mind.

I gave linux the old college try. I just ran into to many hardware issues. Problems with plugins...stuff like that. Working with the terminal can be a headache as well. Dont get me wrong I love what linux stands for, and I might give it another go in the future.

I think the day I gave up was when my favorite porn sites movies wouldn't work hahah
Had to call Bill Gates up immediately!!!!!!!!

old thread but 9.10 was pretty good, now loving the new 10.04 for desktop.

Still a big fan of Red Hat for server side though, easily incorporated in an AIX environment

Linux is great but I dont see it ever taking over Microsoft even on the server side. Server 2008 r2 is pretty sweet, active directory is the only way to go IMO if you are managing around 500 pcs and 1200 users. I use linux all the time and would love to see it win the battle but it will never make microsoft disappear. Suse and ubuntu are great, one of the best things with linux is a program called FOG (Free Open Ghost) it is excellent for imaging workstations

Man I am in Love with my Distro. I run PinGuyOS a Ubuntu spinoff it is by far the best I have run and I have run a ton of them. I was even able to set up my Kodak wireless printer on it and Kodak doesn't support Linux. I have no need for windows ever again. My PinGuyOS just runs and runs fast.

Just wanted to brag a little on Linux

Ubuntu 11.04 with the Unity desktop is the shit! It's beginner friendly but yet flexible enough for the advanced user to still do his thing. I haven't used Winblows on a home computer for 3 years now and I have never looked back! Actually I'll get a Mac before I get another Win PC.

The new Fedora 15 is pretty nice too even though I think Unity takes out Gnome 3.

I like windows boxes more than linux boxes LMAO I always back off when I see a linux box. It's nice to see people that still believe in something ... BTW bt3 was secks, bt4 was hot secks, bt5 was a premature condition

Welcome to the dark side lol, I love linux there is nothing you can't do, and if you need a windows program you can use Wine to install it on your linux distro, here is my Linux setup because I got bored with the default theme.

If you like Linux, you could always get a Mac. It's build on FreeBSD; and much of the kernel is still the same as Linux/Unix.

I know the script with linux... i know that one day it will control the world. M$ is gonna crash n burn in its shadow.

I always thought it, but now i know! Linux is the best out there.

I have been on it for a couple of weeks and have only needed to use my MS OS to look up something on the net which i cant on Linux as i have not yet installed the correct plug in.

Im so in love with Linux now that im gonna wipe my HDD and fvck bill gates debacle of an OS right off and only have Linux on it.

I have purchased a book on how to navigate and install stuff, its so easy... i really dont know what people are affraid of. The power it grants you is so much more than anything ive seen... Like for an example i have it pumping out to the max when on AC power, when on Batter i have it set up to run on 25% and using a power saving feature. I didnt have to install any fancy programs or configure anything. all i did was open an application it has an adjust a few settings. Its so easy a spazz could use it

It never fvcks up, never freezes! if it shuts down by me not connecting the AC or acidently pressing the power off button, after boot up it goes back to the state it last left.

That was mainly for the bros who dont know much about it.....

For the bros who do, guys i have arrived! im in love with Linux big time, im finally here and im never going back
It is good, I run a few OS...although I have a custom build........just need to get some new input devices. Going to upgrade, and close the back door, whats your take?

I agree with you guys.. Linux is an awesome OS but it has its flaws...You need to be a decent advance user or else you are going to have trouble installing hardware, updating, navigating, and using the terminal. I don't believe Linux is going to replace windows anytime soon, because Windows was made for dummy users (no offense) and 90 percent of the users are in that frame.

However, if you want to have of both worlds then install Linux and windows 7 (not windows 8 == sucks)on the same hard-drive, dual OS..

I build all of my servers using Debian Linux. It's a great OS, for desktop or servers, as it's super stable, widely supported, and very dynamic, but it's not for everyone.

True but not true. Installing drivers for hardware can be a real pain compiling from source. Once you figure out how to compile tar files its really not that difficult but for the not so advanced users there are repositories. Adding the right repos make installing drivers, programs and everything super easy regardless of the distribution you are running. Linux will not replace windows though but it sure us fun to use
