    Latest movie reviews...

Swing Vote...debated on this one, but ran out of two for one's and made it a second (obviously). A not-so-crazy theme considering the last presidential run came down to only hundreds of votes in FL, and likely inspired this script which is good, but the caliber of acting is this movies bread & butter. Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, Nathan Lane, Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci I'd go see these guys in a spitting contest! So, if you want to take a break from action which most junkies can't, or if you're a true fan of the cinema there's a lot of good humor and acting here.

Tropic Thunder...mixed reviews, but if you like the cast you'll like the film, both of which were applicable for me...thumbs up with that caveat. And what can I say about Jr.? This guy can't stop jonesing, but he is one heck of an actor!

House Bunny...need I really say more? Hef and the girls are rather prominently featured, along with some decent humor. Anna seems less attractively thinner, yet no less hot, not in beautiful way but more so that undeniable Paris Hilton heat. If you're a rare theater attendee, this wouldn't even rank among your current comedic choices, but if you're an Anna Faris fan, or are up for seeing some college hijinks and bunnies then enjoy.

The Rocker...a little funnier, but similar to the above critique and of course w/o the bunnies. This one has it's moments, but is much more appropriate for those familiar with it's barely post-teen cast members.

Pineapple Express...great star chemistry, and solid humor but this is a very different type of comedy. Its unconventialism is somewhat reminiscent of "Pulp Fiction" in that the gore is completely unexpected, factors oddly into the movie, and may turn many viewers both off and away. However, this off brand of comedy still fills the bill and will always have an small but loyal following.

Step Brothers...speaking of "off brand comedy", this one seeks to capitalize on the success and chemistry the leads experienced in Talladega, and the lesser enjoyed in "Walk Hard" and does a decent job of it. Although the 40-year old, failure to thrive and leave the nest theme is familiar, they add a truly crass (as only they can) twist which attempts to add humor, but depending on your perspective can also subtract from it. Everyone in this film needs to have their mouths washed out with soap (old school lesson), and hopefully the box office take will finally echo this. But don't get me wrong, these guys are funny, that being said...IT'S YOUR CALL.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor...Rachel Weisz, the co-starring brunette vixen of the first two films, made a good choice sitting this one out. Speaking of "sitting out", Angelina won't be reprising her role in the third Croft adventure possibly because of the burgeoning family and new twins, however a very fit, and attractive UK gymnast Alison Carroll takes up the gauntlet... http://www.tombraiderlive.com/models/alison/. I don't know the circumstances surrounding Rachel's decision, but this mummy movie is more of the same with less appeal. Jet added some kick (pun intended), but it just didn't have much punch. It seemed way to contrived with a less natural more forced/deliberate humor, which fails to deliver the magic and chemistry that made the first two (mostly the original) so special.

Mirrors...the manager at the theater, whom of course I rap with, hated it. That said, if you're a fan of this genre which he admittedly has a problem with, you'll love it. In his defense the script is a bit under-developed but that's not what carries the day in such films...the suspense is chilling, the supernaturalism is spectacular, the FX are even more captivating, Kiefer is great, and Paula Patton (Hitch, Deja Vu, and Idlewild) is solid and provides some welcomed eye candy. Overall, this is one of the best Suspense/Horror and Thrillers (it's movie billing) I've ever seen. And that's a big statement!

Death Race...In a word, WOW! This was virtually non-stop adrenaline-charged, death-defying and sometimes succumbing, film that packs every ounce of the punch promised by the trailer. If this one even somewhat intrigues you, go see it, and be surprised. Of course there's precedent for this theme, most recently "The Condemned" where Stone Cold was given the same "Win/live and earn your freedom" deal on an island, but these offensive and defensive equipped cars (and track) infinitely up the ante and excitement in this one. Statham was ripped as usual and fantastic, but the movie is SIMPLY GREAT!
